Assistant Operations Manager

At Ports America, the Assistant Operations Manager is part of the front-line management team and will effectively direct, plan and supervise the duties associated with terminal operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe, and productive operations for assigned customers, terminal area, and cargo type.The Assistant Operations Manager is responsible for participating in the development and achievement of operational and financial goals and objectives and incorporating Ports America Values of Safety, Integrity, Pursue Excellence, Create Happiness, Connect and One Team in all aspects of communication, behavior, and business dealings.Essential Duties:Work closely with terminal staff to prepare department plans while determining the appropriate workforce to hire for an efficient and cost-effective completion of plan. Supervise union represented personnel in proper operating procedures and as needed will counsel, discipline, or make termination recommendations to ensure an efficient operation while working within the definitions of the labor agreement. Enforce productivity levels by supervising longshore workers in making multiple rounds within the terminal and a follow up assessment prior to shift end. Complete various reports and forms such as shift production, payroll, and safety summaries; produce reports to respective parties within required deadlines. Support, monitor, and trouble shoot, when necessary, terminal operating systems, ensuring data is accurate. Additional technology-related duties may apply. Plan, hold, and document daily safety meetings; partnering with Area Health, Safety & Environment to understand and train longshore workers to adhere to safety procedures while implementing plans to address safety hazards. Report problems and issues to the appropriate Manager of great impact and complexity to the operation. Responsible for learning, navigating, and adhering to all union contracts. Performs other related duties as directed by business need.Minimum Qualifications:High School Diploma or GED2+ years of experience in maritime, logistics, terminal operations, or related supply chain industry2+ years of supervisory experienceObtain and maintain TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland SecurityValid US Driver’s LicensePreferred QualificationsBachelor’s degree or higher in Marine Administration, Transportation, Operations Management, Engineering, or related disciplineExperience with computerized operating systemsKnowledge of safety and accident prevention protocols and regulationsKnowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability.Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operationsPhysical Working Conditions:Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shiftWork in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment.Lift, push, and or pull up to 30lbs.NOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
