Job Description Chronicle Heritage is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Senior Geoarchaeologist to join our team. The successful candidate will lead geoarchaeological investigations, contribute to multidisciplinary projects, and provide expert guidance on archaeological site formation processes, landscape evolution, and environmental reconstruction. This role involves both fieldwork and office-based tasks, including project management, client interaction, and report writing. In addition to geoarchaeology, the successful candidate will have a strong background in GIS and will assist in the development of prehistoric sensitivity, settlement, and buried site models. The candidate will work with Principal Investigators from multiple offices and Chronicle’s Principal Geoarchaeologist as part of the Technology Innovation Team. Preference given to candidates who also have experience as a Senior Archaeologist capable of managing or assisting on California based archaeological projects. Hire Type: Full-time (salaried) Schedule: 40 hours, Monday–Friday (flexible schedule) Location: Hybrid: Remote and local office in Pacwest Territory: California, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah Responsibilities Project Management: Manage geoarchaeological projects to completion, ensuring timely delivery within budget and meeting client expectations. Field Investigations: Conduct and oversee geoarchaeological fieldwork, including site assessments, soil and sediment sampling, stratigraphic analysis, and landscape surveys. Data Analysis: Analyze geomorphological data using both lithologic and pedogenic frameworks applying various techniques such as micromorphology, sedimentology, palynology, and geochronology to interpret site formation processes and environmental changes. Calibrate and interpret radiocarbon dates and other soil dating methods. GIS: Develop cross-sections, site maps, geologic and soil maps, and buried site sensitivity models. Work with aerial LiDAR, remote sensing, geologic and environmental, and other forms of spatial data. Develop prehistoric site sensitivity, settlement pattern, and other types of models. Reporting: Prepare detailed technical reports, including geoarchaeological assessments, environmental reconstructions, and impact analyses. Ensure reports meet regulatory requirements and professional standards. Client Interaction: Liaise with clients, tribes, and regulatory agencies to provide expert advice, present findings, and ensure compliance with cultural resource regulations. Team Leadership: Mentor and supervise junior archaeologists and geoarchaeologists, providing training and guidance in field methods, data analysis, and report writing. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with archaeologists, historians, and other specialists to integrate geoarchaeological insights into broader project goals. Research and Development: Stay current with advancements in geoarchaeology, contribute to academic and professional publications, and present research at conferences and seminars. Compliance: Ensure all work complies with relevant local, state, and federal regulations, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and other cultural resource management guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Graduate degree in Geoarchaeology, Soil Science, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field with a strong emphasis on geoarchaeological methods. 5+ years of experience in geoarchaeology, preferably within a Cultural Resources Management 5+ years of experience in managing complex projects and leading field investigations. Meets or exceeds Department of Interior Standards for field supervisor. Proficiency in geoarchaeological field methods and laboratory techniques. Proficiency in archaeological field methods and cataloging systems. Expert analytics skills, can easily translate large datasets into clear, publishable insights Experience with GIS, GNSS, mobile devices, digital documentation, digital photography, remote sensing, and statistical software. Reside in the territory (West): California, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah Preferred Skills Relevant professional certifications (e.g., RPA, GSA, AIPG) Background in desert, coastal, and fluvial environments Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to produce high-quality technical reports and research publications. Physical And Mental Requirements And Work Environment Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems. May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison oak, etc. May require use of respiratory equipment. Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or work around heavy construction equipment. Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text). Mental requirements include ability to organize one’s own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately. Some work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and requires sustained sitting and use of fingers, hands, and arms to operate a computer and perform keyboard entry of data or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation).
