Assistant Public Defender

The 22nd Judicial District Public Defender's Office is seeking a dedicated and motivated attorney to join our team in representing indigent clients in St. Tammany Parish District Court and/or Washington Parish District Court in felony criminal matters. This position requires strong courtroom advocacy, sound legal judgment, compassion for clients navigating difficult situations and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Job duties include: Representing clients at all stages of criminal proceedings in felony and misdemeanor matters.Conducting legal research and drafting motions, memoranda and other pleadings as needed. Maintaining regular contact with clients, including incarcerated individualsNegotiating with prosecutors and advocating for fair resolutionsMaintaining accurate and timely case documentation including jail visits and client contactsUpholding ethical obligations and constitutional standards of representation Qualifications:Juris Doctor from an accredited law schoolLicensed to practice law in LouisianaStrong written and oral advocacy skillsAbility to manage a substantial caseload efficiently Trial experience preferred, but not required. Salary is commensurate with experience.
