Position OverviewThe Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch seeks board-certified internists at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level to join a growing Division of General Medicine serving Southeast Texas through UTMB's multi-campus health system.Faculty members will provide comprehensive adult primary care, hospital medicine services, consultative general medicine, and care for medically complex patients, contribute to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows, and have opportunities to develop scholarly activities aligned with their interests and the division's strategic priorities.Department OverviewThe Department of Internal Medicine is the largest department within UTMB's John Sealy School of Medicine. All faculty maintain clinical practice and contribute to educational activities commensurate with their appointment.Clinical ResponsibilitiesHospital Medicine:Provide attending coverage or direct patient care on general medicine inpatient services with daily rounds, patient evaluation, and treatment plan developmentManage patients admitted with common medical conditions including pneumonia, heart failure, COPD exacerbations, acute kidney injury, sepsis, diabetic complications, and other general medical conditionsLead interdisciplinary rounds with nursing, pharmacy, case management, physical therapy, and social workMake admission, discharge, and transfer decisions with attention to appropriate level of careConduct family meetings and goals of care discussionsCoordinate subspecialty consultation and co-managementParticipate in quality improvement initiatives including reduction of hospital-acquired conditions and readmission preventionProvide perioperative medical consultation and co-management for surgical patientsSupervise residents and medical students during inpatient rotations with bedside teaching and clinical reasoning educationGeneral ResponsibilitiesParticipate in call coverage for inpatient services, Maritime consults (not all may be applicable) Document clinical encounters with comprehensive assessment, treatment plans, and follow-up arrangementsEnsure compliance with coding and billing practices for primary care and hospital medicine servicesParticipate in clinical quality improvement initiativesEngage in peer review, case review, and quality assurance activitiesMaintain current knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice guidelinesEducational ResponsibilitiesSupervise Internal Medicine residents in inpatient general medicine services and serve as longitudinal career mentorsTeach bedside clinical skills including history-taking, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and communication skillsProvide procedural teaching including basic procedures (venipuncture, intravenous access, Foley catheter placement) and advanced procedures (paracentesis, thoracentesis, arthrocentesis, central line placement, arterial line placement) as applicableDeliver didactic lectures on general medicine topics including common inpatient and outpatient conditions, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based medicineServe as preceptor for medical students in primary care clerkships and longitudinal integrated clerkships Participate in departmental and institutional educational conferences including morning report, grand rounds, and morbidity and mortality conferencesMentor trainees in career development, specialty selection, and professional identity formationContribute to curriculum development, competency assessment, and program evaluation for medical student and residency educationProvide interprofessional education to nursing students, pharmacy residents, and allied health traineesCANDIDATE PROFILERequired QualificationsMD or DO degree from an accredited institutionBoard certification or board eligibility in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (or equivalent)Eligibility for medical licensure in the State of TexasCompletion of ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residencyDemonstrated commitment to clinical excellence, education, and professional developmentCompensation And SupportCompensation follows the Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Compensation Plan and is benchmarked to AAMC Faculty Salary Survey data aligned by academic rank and geographic region.
