Controller/Vice President
We are seeking to fill a Controller/Vice President role, which is a dynamic, hands-on leader responsible for overseeing the organization’s accounting operations in alignment with modern financial practices. This role provides strategic direction and direct oversight of all accounting, audit, and financial compliance functions. The Controller ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintains robust internal controls, and supports organizational decision-making through timely, reliable financial information. The position is accountable for ensuring that all financial records comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable regulations, and contemporary accounting standards.
This position reports directly to the CFO and the role is based in Portland, ME.
Roles and Responsibilities
Accounting and Financial Leadership
Direct the overall accounting function, including payables, receivables, reconciliations, and related financial activities.
Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting.
Maintain financial records in accordance with GAAP and other applicable accounting requirements.
Provide reporting and analysis on business performance, including margins, revenue trends, cost drivers, and operating results.
Support forecasting, budgeting, and broader financial planning efforts.
Business Analysis and Profitability
Evaluate financial results to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
Build and refine costing methodologies across different lines of business.
Partner with leadership to improve pricing discipline, financial visibility, and profit performance.
Develop analysis that supports operational and strategic decision-making.
Cash Flow and Working Capital
Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and working capital to help maintain a strong financial position.
Oversee invoicing, collections, customer payment activity, and vendor disbursements.
Review aging and credit trends and help drive the timely resolution of outstanding balances.
Controls, Compliance, and Audit
Help maintain a sound internal control environment to protect company assets.
Support compliance with relevant financial, tax, and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate with outside auditors and assist with audit-related deliverables.
Team Leadership
Provide direction, coaching, and development for accounting and finance team members.
Identify process improvement and training opportunities across the department.
Oversee both internal and outsourced accounting-related workstreams, as needed.
Systems and Process Oversight
Manage and improve the use of accounting and financial systems, including ERP platforms.
Help ensure transactions are recorded accurately and on a timely basis.
Qualifications
At least 7 to 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility.
Strong computer skills including Google Docs, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage tasks to meet deadlines and expectations with minimal supervision
Confident, professional demeanor and ability to maintain composure in a busy environment
Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication skills.
Strong Accounting skills to include treasury, payroll, accounting, A/P, A/R and credit
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance. CPA, CMA, or similar certification is a plus.
Pay: $140,000.00 per year
