NMED participates in E-Verify and will verify employment eligibility upon hire Why does the job exist?The purpose of this position is to support the Drinking Water Bureau's Water Conservation Fund Group in administering the Water Conservation Fund (WCF) and providing monitoring services to public water systems in accordance with WCF requirements. The general purpose of this position is to protect public health by collecting water quality samples from public water systems throughout the State of New Mexico to ensure compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and New Mexico drinking water regulatory requirements. How does it get done?Collect water samples from over 200 public water systems while adhering to rigorous Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) protocolsEnsure compliance for public water systems by following the mandates of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) while remaining up-to-date with regulatory changes and best practices to ensure continued adherence-Utilize Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Information System database to coordinate with the Drinking Water Bureau (DWB) compliance team-Plan sampling events to maximize accuracy while minimizing costs and ensuring that resources are used efficiently by utilizing strategic scheduling and logistics to optimize the sampling process-Maintain detailed records of sampling results and procedures-Ensure all documentation meets regulatory standards and facilitates transparent communication with regulatory agencies Who are the customers?New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations Internal staff Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will have experience in the following:Collecting water samples or conducting other types of samplingPlanning/preparing/executing large complex sampling projects spread over large geographic areasWorking with or interacting with public water systemsMicrosoft Office Suite, especially Excel, GIS (or other spatial analysis) or any other database Interacting with various local, state, or federal agencies regarding compliance with environmental regulations Minimum QualificationBachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certificate as a condition of continued employment. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage under sometimes stressful situations as well as outside of the office Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
