We own three buildings downtown, where we provide Rhode Island artists of all ages with affordable access to creative education opportunities, galleries, performance venues, residential spaces, and work studios. Our largest programs are AS220 Youth and our Live/Work program. Exhibitions and performances in our galleries and venues are unjuried, uncensored, and all ages. AS220 envisions a just world where all people can realize their full creative potential.Position SummaryThe Development Director leads the strategy, planning and implementation of fundraising initiatives that respond to organizational needs and priorities to ensure that our programs can support artists and our community. This role is responsible for raising the funds necessary to sustain and grow AS220, and for accountability to funders and donors. The Development Director must both steward long-term relationships and grow the donor & funder base for AS220 in alignment with our mission and values.Core ResponsibilitiesMajor Gifts & Donor StrategyCultivate and steward a portfolio of major donors and key supportersPartner with the Artistic Director on high-level donor stewardship & relationship strategyDevelop and implement strategies to re-engage and steward lapsed fundersBuild and lead a planned giving and legacy programMaintain a culture of stewardship with timely, meaningful donor acknowledgmentGrants & Institutional FundingOversee the grants program, including calendar management & grant writer coordinationWrite and submit foundation and government grant proposals as neededCoordinate grant reporting, stewardship, and relationships with foundation officersAlign grant strategy with programmatic priorities and emerging funding opportunitiesEnsure all proposals reflect AS220's anti-racist values and commitmentsEvents, Campaigns & PartnershipsDevelop and execute special events and fundraising campaign strategiesStrategize external events and opportunities for Artistic Director participationLead corporate sponsorships & partnership developmentCoordinate funder engagement opportunities and site visitsBoard & Organizational EngagementActivate and support Board involvement in fundraising and donor cultivationPartner with and support the Development CommitteeBuild a culture of philanthropy across staff and Board grounded in shared understanding of how funding and programming are interconnectedStrategy, Systems & AnalysisMaintain and manage the annual fundraising calendar and deadlinesAnalyze fundraising data and trends to inform strategyPrepare clear, compelling reports for leadership and the BoardStay current with development trends, tools, and technologiesResearch funding trends and collaborate with program staff to shape fundable initiativesLeadership & ValuesSupervise development staff and contractorsCo-create and implement anti-racist, community-centric fundraising practicesEnsure transparency and accountability in development processesContribute to an organizational culture rooted in equity, creativity, and careWhat Success Looks LikeAS220's supporters continue to feel informed and connected to the workFundraising from individual donors grows annually, in dollars and number of donorsGovernment contracts and grants are well managed and continue to provide resourcesThe Artistic Director is supported to effectively engage with major donorsImportant ContextAS220's revenue mix has changed significantly over our four decades. The upheaval of the last 6 years has seen a shift in funding to include significant government contracts at all levels, while corporate and foundation support has diminished.
