Job Title: Structural Fitter – Skid Units (Natural Gas Compressor Packages)
Location: New Iberia, LA
Shift: 1st shift, Mon-Fri 6am-4:30pm, some Sat as needed
Employment Type: Full-Time (Contract-to-hire)
Position Summary
The Structural Fitter is responsible for laying out, fitting, and assembling structural steel components used in the fabrication of skid-mounted natural gas compressor packages. This role requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, perform precise layout and measurement, utilize leveling and alignment equipment, and tack weld using MIG and Flux-Core processes to prepare assemblies for final welding. The ideal candidate has experience in heavy fabrication, skid builds, and industrial equipment manufacturing.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
Read and interpret structural blueprints, fabrication drawings, and assembly schematics.
Layout, fit, and assemble structural steel skids, frames, platforms, supports, and bases for natural gas compressor packages.
Measure, mark, and align components using precision measuring tools including tape measures, squares, levels, lasers, transits, and plumb bobs.
Utilize leveling equipment to ensure proper skid alignment, flatness, and squareness.
Perform tack welding using MIG (GMAW) and Flux-Core (FCAW) processes.
Fit components for final welding, ensuring dimensional accuracy and proper joint configuration.
Operate fabrication equipment including saws, ironworkers, drills, grinders, and layout tables.
Verify dimensions and tolerances throughout the fabrication process.
Install mounting pads, brackets, supports, and equipment bases per engineering drawings.
Work collaboratively with welders, machinists, and assembly teams to meet production schedules.
Maintain compliance with AWS structural standards and company quality procedures.
Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 3–5 years of structural fitting experience in industrial fabrication or manufacturing.
Proven experience building skid-mounted equipment or heavy structural assemblies.
Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
Proficiency with precision measuring and leveling tools.
Ability to tack weld using MIG and Flux-Core.
Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication methods.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in awkward positions, and stand for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building natural gas compressor packages or oil & gas skids.
Knowledge of AWS D1.1 structural welding code.
Experience working with laser alignment tools.
Forklift and overhead crane certification.
Work Environment
Manufacturing and fabrication shop environment.
Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, noise, and heavy equipment.
PPE required including safety glasses, gloves, welding helmet, and steel-toe boots.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $27.50 - $28.50 per hour
Expected hours: 40 – 60 per week
