Leadership in the classroom, a collaborative spirit, a robust work ethic, and an enthusiastic, positive attitude are the hallmarks of our team members.RequirementsPosition Minimum RequirementsThree or more years of reading teaching experience, preferably at the elementary levelExperience with explicit phonics, especially with programs like Literacy Essentials, Riggs, Spaulding, and Orton-Gillingham type programs.SC Teaching Certificate (or ability to obtain one prior to the start of employment)One of the following:Bachelor's degree or higher and the Read to Succeed (R2S) Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement; orBachelor’s degree or higher and is actively pursuing the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement; orMaster’s degree or higher in reading or a closely related field and is actively pursuing the R2S Literacy Coach or R2S Literacy Specialist endorsement.Experience coaching teachers in curriculum and instructionDemonstrated ability to implement instructional strategies that enhance student learningFamiliarity with SC state ELA standards, assessments, and law impacting K-12 literacy curriculum and instructionAfter offer is accepted, satisfactory background check as required by state law and the South Carolina Department of EducationDedication to the value of a rigorous liberal arts educationLoyalty to the school and ACA’s mission and visionCommitment to model moral character in line with the school’s Core Virtues and the pursuit of the Good, True, and BeautifulAdherence to all ACA policies, including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and all applicable school and board policies.Additional Preferred RequirementsMaster’s degree in teaching, curriculum and instruction, or related degreeOrton-Gillingham trainingExperience evaluating and recommending K-12 literacy curriculumPosition SpecificsThe primary goal of the Literacy Coach is to improve the school’s K-8 reading and literacy instruction and student achievement. Particular emphasis will be placed on supporting K-3 teachers in delivering effective literacy instruction with fidelity to Ascent’s literacy curriculum. The ideal candidate is a master teacher with experience coaching and mentoring staff in explicit phonics instruction as well as providing literacy-based professional development. The Literacy Coach will complete both routine tasks and larger projects of the corporate curriculum and instruction team.Duties And ResponsibilitiesContinuously evaluate, recommend improvements of, and facilitate initial and ongoing training of Ascent Classical Academies K-3 literacy program for teachers and school leaders..Provide ongoing formal and informal observations, co-teaching, modeling, and coaching of literacy teaching in K-8 classrooms.Provide actionable feedback/reports of literacy curriculum and instructional effectiveness to teachers, school leaders, corporate leadership, and the school board.Attend regular curriculum and instruction team meetings to identify/resolve challenges, provide updates, track academic data, and initiate/prioritize projects.Maintain literacy components of curricular materials, supply lists, and the academic program guide.Remain up to date on training and research regarding evidence-based literacy curricula and instructional approaches.Support curriculum and instruction projects and processes for the school leadership team, including the development of the annual School Reading Plan required by the SC Department of Education.As needed, support literacy instructional coaches at other ACA campuses with regular communication and guidance.Follow school policies and procedures to ensure the safety and security of studentsAttend special school events (e.g., information sessions, concerts, plays, presentations)Attend all staff meetings and professional development opportunitiesPursue excellence in teaching and continue to develop knowledge of the great ideas and works of Western CivilizationMaintain regular, punctual attendance.
