Job DescriptionPosted Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 6:00 AMGeneral DescriptionUnder general supervision, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; to control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; to perform investigative work; to participate in and provide support and assistance to special department crime prevention and enforcement programs; and to do related work as assigned.SUPERVISION EXERCISEDThis position exercises no supervision.Important And Essential DutiesAffect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting suspects using maneuvers, skills and techniques; resort to the use of hands, feet, and approved chemical or impact weapons in self-defense.Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.Exercise independent judgment in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest, and when force may be used and to what degree force is used.Operate a law enforcement vehicle, as required by assignment, during both the day and night; in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic, and in unsafe road conditions caused by fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow, and/or other factors.Communicate effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications.Operate computer terminals or mobile data terminals as required.Carry, wear, and/or transport weapons, handcuffs, uniforms, and other equipment as appropriate to the assignment and in the manner prescribed by Department policy.Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.Pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations, which may involve quickly entering and exiting law enforcement patrol vehicles; lifting, carrying and dragging heavy objects; climbing over and pulling oneself over obstacles; jumping over ditches and streams; crawling in confined areas; balancing on uneven or narrow surfaces and using body force to gain entrance through barriers.Load, unload, aim, and fire handguns, shotguns and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and requires levels of proficiency prescribed in Department Qualification standards.Identify people, vehicles, and objects from descriptions given by others and accurately describe people, vehicles, and objects to others.Perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and/or large outdoor areas, which may involve feeling and detecting objects; walking for long periods of time; detaining people, and stopping suspicious vehicles and persons.Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.Engage in law enforcement patrol functions that include working evening and midnight shifts; walking on foot patrol, and physically checking the doors and windows of buildings to ensure they are secure.Demonstrate effective communication skills with people (including juveniles) when giving information, directions, advising of rights and processes, and providing testimony in court and in other formal settings.Detect and collect evidence and substances that provide the basis of criminal investigations of offenses and infractions, and that indicate the presence of dangerous conditions.Endure verbal abuse when confronted with hostile or antagonistic views and opinions of suspects, witnesses, or other people encountered during the course of an assignment.Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters to include directing traffic for extended periods of time, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging, and carrying people away from dangerous situations as well as securing and evacuating people from particular areas to ensure safety.Process and transport prisoners and committed mental patients using handcuffs and other appropriate restraints.Wear and operate a gas mask when chemical munitions are being deployed.Extinguish small fires via a fire extinguisher and other appropriate means.Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents, including the preparation and processing of documents, i.e., affidavits, warrants, and citations.Process arrested persons to include taking their photographs and obtaining a legible set of inked fingerprint impressions.Develop and maintain good relationships with the public, including informants and contacts, which may be helpful in criminal investigations.Other Job Related DutiesPerform other job related duties and responsibilities as assigned.Knowledge OfKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESBasic organization and function of a municipal law enforcement agency.English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.Safe driving principles and practices.Skill ToUse and operate a variety of tools and equipment used in law enforcement including handcuffs, fire extinguisher, camera, videotape equipment, baton, radio equipment, gas masks, and other protective apparatus.Operate office equipment including computer equipment.Safely operate a motor vehicle.Use and care for firearms safely.Ability ToUse police methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification techniques.Use criminal law and criminal procedure with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to the seizure and preservation of evidence.Understand offensive and defensive weapons nomenclature and theory.Perform self-defense tactics.Interview and interrogate individuals.Facilitate standard broadcasting procedures over a police radio system.Understand, and interpret Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.Accurately observe and remember faces, numbers, incidents, and places.Think and act quickly in emergencies and judge situations and people accurately.Prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.Understand and carry out oral and written directions.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.Follow and embrace the City of Abilene Core Values – Respect, Integrity, Service Above Self, and Excellence in All We Do.Experience And Training GuidelinesAny combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.
