In many cases, these environments consist of deeply interconnected Excel workbooks with embedded calculation logic, limited documentation, heavy manual dependencies, and significant reliance on institutional knowledge.Consultants in this role will help clients untangle and stabilize complex Excel-based financial ecosystems supporting partnership calculations, allocations, forecasting, and reporting processes across large stakeholder groups. This includes reverse engineering spreadsheet logic, identifying control gaps and process risks, improving visibility into how calculations are performed, and helping clients establish a more scalable and supportable operating model.The work is highly analytical, investigative, and transformation-oriented — ideal for someone who enjoys stepping into ambiguity, solving operational complexity, and bringing structure to highly customized finance processes.What You’ll DoAnalyze and deconstruct large, highly customized Excel-based accounting and allocation models with complex interdependenciesReverse engineer spreadsheet logic and workflows to understand how partnership calculations, allocations, and reporting processes are functioning todayIdentify manual process risks, control gaps, versioning issues, and operational bottlenecks across finance workflowsHelp stabilize environments that currently rely heavily on institutional knowledge and undocumented processesImprove auditability, transparency, and governance around financial calculations and reportingSupport the design and implementation of workflow automation and reporting enhancements using tools such as Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI, Alteryx, or similar technologiesPartner with accounting, finance, operations, and technology stakeholders to document current-state processes and define future-state workflowsEnhance forecasting, scenario modeling, and “what-if” analysis capabilities that are currently difficult to perform within existing spreadsheet environmentsAssist clients in reducing manual effort and creating more scalable, supportable financial operationsContribute to broader modernization initiatives that may eventually evolve into enterprise platform or SaaS-based solutionsWhat We’re Looking ForStrong background in accounting, finance, financial systems, or operational transformationAdvanced Excel expertise, including experience troubleshooting, rebuilding, auditing, or optimizing highly complex workbooks and financial modelsExperience working within complex accounting or allocation environments, ideally involving, partnership accounting, investment operations, or financial reportingAbility to navigate ambiguous environments and independently structure analytical problem-solving effortsExperience modernizing or automating manual finance and accounting workflowsFamiliarity with Microsoft Power Platform tools (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) and/or Alteryx is strongly preferredUnderstanding of controls, governance, ICFR, SOX, audit readiness, or risk management conceptsStrong communication and stakeholder management skills across both business and technical teamsConsulting experience or experience supporting large-scale transformation initiatives is preferredIdeal Experience IncludesCleaning up or rebuilding fragmented Excel-based financial environmentsSupporting finance transformation or operational stabilization initiativesAutomating accounting or reporting processes previously managed through spreadsheetsImproving controls and visibility within audit-sensitive financial processesSupporting due diligence, remediation, or process standardization effortsLeveraging AI, Copilot, or intelligent automation concepts within finance operationsWhy EmberAt Ember, we believe great consulting is built on partnership, curiosity, adaptability, and execution.
