Position Title: Translator / Interpreter (Part-Time)Payroll/Personnel Type: HourlyJob #: 9478Reports to: ESOL/Bilingual/Migrant Executive DirectorShift Length: 8 Hours a DayUnion Eligibility: Not EligiblePosition Summary:Professional translators are capable of interpreting and translating from English to the target language and vice versa. Target languages include, but are not limited to: Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Somali, Nepali, and Dari.Essential FunctionsTranslate district documents from English to the target languageEdit district documents translated from English to the target languageInterpret during meetings including, but not limited to: parent-teacher conferences, parent meetings in school, parent meetings in the ESOL office, home visitsAssist new ELL families with district enrollment documentsConduct ESOL welcome sessions in the target language for ELLs new to St. Louis Public SchoolsSupport new ELL student orientations by presenting information in the target languageProvide language support in the target language to ELL families visiting the ESOL office with questions, problems, and/or concernsProvide over-the-phone language support to ELL families contacting the ESOL officeProvide over-the-phone language support to district staff communicating with ELL familiesParticipate in the planning of ESOL Program parent meetingsConduct ESOL Program parent meetings in the target languageRecord automated messages in the target language to communicate district information to ELL familiesMake phone calls in the target language to communicate district information to ELL familiesContribute to day-to-day operations of the ESOL officeEnsure that all translations adhere to district policies and proceduresOther duties assigned by the administratorKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesNative or near-native proficiency in the target language, both orally and in writingAttention to detail and ability to multi-taskComputer literate, proficient with MS Word and have the ability to type 40 wpmExperienceThree years of experience as a Translator/Interpreter is preferredEducationA minimum of 60 college credit hours from an accredited college or university in the US (a 2-year degree program from outside the US is accepted) ORBachelor's degree (Bachelor's degree from outside the US is accepted) ORCompletion of Missouri's online Substitute training programFrontline TrainingPhysical RequirementsMust be physically able to operate a motor vehicleMust be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects including the human bodyLight work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degreeWorking Conditions and EnvironmentWork is routinely performed in a typical interior/office environmentVery limited or no exposure to physical riskDisclaimerThe information contained in this job description is for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position.
