Enterprise ArchitectThe Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), is NASA's science operations center for missions including the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. STScI leads observation planning, data analysis, public engagement, and data archiving for flagship missions. Our staff spans astronomy, engineering, education, IT, communications, and administrationworking together to bring space science to the world. This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV). This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residence in order to meet ITAR requirements. Role Overview The Enterprise Architect (EA) is accountable for enterprise-wide technology strategy alignment with mission science, engineering, and institutional business objectives. This role provides cross-domain architectural governance across mission systems, enterprise platforms, and shared services to ensure: Strategic technology alignment Architectural coherence and interoperability Cybersecurity and regulatory compliance (ITAR, federal standards) Technical sustainability and scalability Elimination of redundant systems Modernization through cloud-native and SaaS adoption Optimization of Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) The EA partners with Chief Engineers, mission leadership, IT operations, and division stakeholders to enforce architecture standards, drive reuse of enterprise platforms, and enable long-term digital transformation initiatives. Core Competencies & Responsibilities Enterprise Architecture & Governance Architecture Review Board (ARB) leadership Cross-functional technical governance Product roadmap validation & lifecycle management Systems architecture documentation & traceability Functional & non-functional requirements engineering Technical due diligence & procurement influence Cloud & Infrastructure Strategy Hybrid cloud architecture (on-prem, private cloud, public cloud, colocation) SaaS migration strategy & execution Infrastructure as Code (IaC) Cloud integration patterns Migration planning (data, identity, cutover strategy) TCO modeling (current vs future state) Cloud provisioning & enterprise integration Identity, Security & Compliance Identity and Access Management (IAM) Zero Trust architecture principles Modern Identity Providers: Okta, Auth0, AWS Cognito, Keycloak Active Directory integration SIEM, observability & endpoint security Security architecture aligned to certification & regulatory standards Platform & Enterprise Tooling SaaS productivity ecosystems: Microsoft 365, Box Atlassian suite: Jira, Confluence, Product Discovery, Compass ServiceNow enterprise workflows Workflow orchestration (Zapier, n8n.io) Enterprise Architecture Management (EAM) platforms Architecture visualization tools (Mural, Lucid, Mermaid) DevOps & Modern Engineering Containerization & Kubernetes (on-prem & cloud) CI/CD toolchain alignment Cross-domain toolchain integration Observability platforms (Datadog, Splunk) Security tooling (CrowdStrike) AI governance policy development & enterprise AI enablement Strategic & Organizational Leadership Requirements elicitation, decomposition & baselining Stakeholder facilitation & pilot program execution Cross-mission systems integration (NASA & AURA centers alignment) Enterprise communications for architectural change management Process improvement & systems modernization Required Qualifications 7+ years: Chief Architect / Enterprise Architect / IT Architecture Lead 3+ years: Supporting technical operations for 200+ employee organizations 5+ years: On-prem to SaaS migration leadership 5+ years: SaaS collaboration ecosystems (Google Workspace, M365, Box) 2+ years defining and governing enterprise IAM architecture, with demonstrated experience integrating identity providers (Okta, Auth0, AWS Cognito, or Keycloak) and Active Directory Strong Atlassian ecosystem experience (Jira AND Confluence AND Product Discovery AND Compass) Kubernetes (on-prem AND cloud) AI policy development & AI service introduction Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) Preferred Qualifications 10+ years: Enterprise / Chief Architecture leadership 5+ years of experience providing enterprise-level technical architecture support for organizations with 200+ employees, including cross-functional infrastructure, platform, and application ecosystems.
