The Application Engineer is responsible for defining, adapting, and supporting Solid‑State Transformer (SST) and microgrid solutions for data center applications with integrated distributed energy resources and storage. This role serves as the technical bridge between customers, utilities, and internal product teams, translating aggressive AI/ML load requirements and DER capabilities into reliable, scalable, and utility‑compliant system solutions.Key responsibilities:Application Definition & System ArchitectureWork with customers and internal teams to define SST and microgrid system architectures for AI/ML data centers.Translate data center load profiles into electrical system requirements.Support architectures involving: Utility‑connected SSTs (LV/MV)Behind‑the‑meter and hybrid microgridsGrid‑interactive and islanded operationEvaluate technical tradeoffs related to efficiency, redundancy (N, N+1, 2N), fault tolerance, and scalability.Customer & Utility Technical EngagementAct as the primary technical interface with Hyperscalers, colocation providers, EPCs, and utilities.Support customer discussions on: Power delivery architectures (AC vs. DC, MV distribution)Load step response and AI/ML workload dynamicsPower quality, reliability, and resilienceSupport utility‑facing discussions on interconnection, protection, and operational impacts.Standards, Interconnection & Compliance SupportPartner with standards and certification teams to ensure application designs are certifiable and utility‑acceptable.Technical Proposal & Pre‑Sales SupportDevelop technical proposals, system block diagrams, single‑line diagrams, and performance analyses.Support RFP and RFQ responses, including: System sizing and configurationOperating modes and use casesGrid support and resiliency capabilitiesSupport cost‑performance trade studies and solution comparisons.Internal Engineering CollaborationProvide clear application‑level requirements to: Power electronics designControl and software teamsMechanical and thermal engineeringValidate solutions against real‑world data center operating conditions.Provide feedback from customers and the field into product roadmap discussions.Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field. 5+ years of experience in application engineering, systems engineering, or technical pre‑sales for power systems. Strong understanding of: Data center electrical infrastructureHigh‑power AI/ML and HPC load characteristicsGrid‑connected and behind‑the‑meter systemsDER technologies and integration conceptsExperience developing system‑level architectures and interpreting single‑line diagrams. Proven ability to work directly with customers and utilities in technical roles.Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems. Direct experience with: Microgrid systems (grid-following, grid-forming, islanded operation)Medium-voltage power electronics or SST architecturesExperience supporting utility-scale or commercial/industrial microgrids in the US. Familiarity with FERC, state-level interconnection frameworks, and utility rulebooks. Active participation in IEEE, UL STPs, or industry consortiums.
