This role integrates laboratory investigation, preclinical modeling, and clinical observational learning, providing exposure to the full spectrum of physician-scientist work in pediatric orthopaedics.Key ResponsibilitiesClinical ObservationShadow attending physician during daily MSI case review with residents and Advanced Practice ProvidersParticipate in inpatient rounding on musculoskeletal infection consultsObserve MRI workflow, including sedated and non-sedated advanced imaging studiesObserve operative management of pediatric musculoskeletal infectionsAttend outpatient clinics (Monday and Thursday mornings)Participate in weekly MSI Team Meeting (Mondays at 11:00 AM)Laboratory ResearchAssist with basic and translational research activities under supervisionLearn and perform foundational laboratory techniques, including:Bacterial culture and growth processesRNA isolation and preparation for sequencing workflowsTissue processing and histologic analysis (in collaboration with DTR Labs)Assist with focused ultrasound (FUS) experimental workflowsObserve and assist in 7T MRI imaging of preclinical modelsPreclinical Research & ComplianceParticipate in murine model workflows under supervisionAssist with basic animal handling, monitoring, and documentationComplete required training (IACUC, biosafety, laboratory safety)Adhere to institutional and federal guidelines for ethical researchAcademic DevelopmentReview key scientific publications related to pediatric MSIParticipate in research discussions and team meetingsAssist with data organization, literature review, and potential scholarly outputEngage in structured mentorship, including exposure to genomics research (UTSW Genomics Core)Professional DevelopmentParticipate in mentorship focused on careers in medicine and biomedical researchMaintain professionalism, confidentiality, and HIPAA complianceDevelop understanding of translational research from bench to bedsideQualificationsCurrent undergraduate student (preferred: biology, biochemistry, genetics, or related field)Strong academic performance and demonstrated interest in biomedical researchPrior laboratory or research experience preferred but not requiredAbility to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary teamStrong organizational skills and attention to detailWorking EnvironmentCombination of laboratory, clinical, and office environmentsRequires standing, walking, and light lifting (Exposure to laboratory and hospital settings
