Position Overview
The CMM Programmer is a precision-measurement specialist responsible for ensuring manufactured components meet exact engineering, dimensional, and customer requirements.
This position plays a critical role within a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment supporting complex prototypes, one-off components, short production runs, machined parts, sheet metal assemblies, and injection-molded products.
The CMM Programmer will create and execute inspection programs, establish part alignments, select appropriate fixturing methods, perform First Article Inspections, and generate accurate dimensional reports. This individual must be comfortable changing priorities quickly, supporting urgent prototype programs, and communicating inspection results directly with Machining, Fabrication, Engineering, and Quality teams.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with horizontal-arm or gantry CMM equipment, strong knowledge of GD&T, and prior experience within an automotive, aerospace, prototype, tool-and-die, or precision-machining environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesCMM Programming and Inspection
Develop, edit, validate, and execute CMM inspection programs for prototype and short-run production components.
Perform dimensional inspections on a wide variety of products, including:
Complex machined components
Sheet metal assemblies
Welded or fabricated components
Injection-molded parts
Prototype tooling
Low-volume production parts
Select appropriate measurement strategies based on part geometry, drawing requirements, tolerances, and customer expectations.
Establish datums, coordinate systems, alignments, probe paths, and measurement routines.
Program and operate horizontal-arm, bridge, or gantry-style Coordinate Measuring Machines.
Verify CMM programs for accuracy, repeatability, and safe probe movement.
Modify programs as required to accommodate engineering changes, part revisions, and process improvements.
First Article Inspection
Provide dimensional inspection support for First Article Inspection activities.
Verify all applicable blueprint dimensions, GD&T callouts, notes, and customer requirements.
Generate complete and accurate dimensional results for prototype and production-release components.
Support First Article Inspection Reports and related quality documentation.
Identify missing, conflicting, or unclear requirements and communicate concerns to Engineering or Quality leadership.
Ensure inspection data is traceable to the correct drawing revision, part number, and production lot.
Blueprint and CAD Analysis
Read and interpret complex two-dimensional engineering drawings.
Review three-dimensional CAD models to determine:
Inspection requirements
Datum structures
Alignment strategies
Measurement sequences
Critical features
Apply GD&T requirements in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
Review feature-control frames, profile tolerances, true position, runout, flatness, perpendicularity, and other geometric requirements.
Read and interpret files or design data from systems such as:
VISI
CATIA
Other applicable CAD platforms
Work with Engineering to clarify design intent and measurement requirements when needed.
Part Setup and Fixturing
Set up components securely and accurately on the CMM table.
Use Rayco fixtures, clamps, v-blocks, and custom fixturing solutions.
Select setup methods that provide stable, repeatable, and accessible measurements.
Confirm that fixturing does not distort or interfere with the component.
Position parts to support efficient probe access and reliable alignment.
Adjust setups as needed for complex, irregular, or one-off prototype components.
Inspection Reporting and Communication
Generate detailed dimensional inspection reports.
Organize and present measurement data clearly for Quality, Engineering, Production, and customer review.
Use software such as:
PC-DMIS
DataPage
PolyWorks
DISCUS
Microsoft Excel
Identify and document out-of-tolerance conditions.
Communicate deviations promptly to CNC machinists, fabricators, engineers, supervisors, and Quality personnel.
Provide real-time dimensional feedback to support machine adjustments and process corrections.
Assist with nonconformance investigations, containment activities, and corrective actions.
Maintain accurate electronic and physical inspection records.
Precision Hand Inspection
Verify CMM findings using appropriate precision hand-measuring equipment.
Use inspection tools including:
Calipers
Micrometers
Height gauges
Bore gauges
Indicators
Pin gauges
Optical comparators
Select the appropriate measurement method based on feature type, tolerance, accessibility, and accuracy requirements.
Confirm measurement repeatability when results are questionable or near tolerance limits.
