Extra Utility Worker The Shed is a cultural institution of and for the 21st century. In our highly adaptable building on Manhattan's west side, The Shed brings together established and emerging artists to create new work in fields ranging from pop to classical music, painting to digital media, theater to literature, and sculpture to dance. As an independent non-profit that values invention, equity, and generosity, we are committed to advancing art forms, addressing the urgent issues of our time, and making our work impactful, sustainable, and relevant to the local community, the cultural sector, New York City, and beyond.About the Position The Shed has been designed to be a highly adaptable, flexible, and technologically advanced art and performance facility. Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor, The Shed seeks a part-time Extra Utility Worker/Custodian to perform general cleaning, upkeep, and maintenance duties associated with the daily operations and event requirements of this multipurpose facility. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Aligning customer service with The Shed's mission to create a best-in-class visitor experience that is welcoming to allGeneral cleaning and upkeep of offices, public lobbies, galleries, restrooms, event spaces, dressing rooms, and other public and service spacesUse and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools: buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, windows, and other surfacesStrip, clean, buff, and apply floor sealer and floor finish to hard surface floors; vacuum and shampoo carpetsRespond to maintenance and emergency callsUtilize and maintain chemicals and supplies in a safe and effective mannerHandle trash removal and recycling dutiesOther duties as may be requiredQualifications and Qualities High school diploma or GED equivalentPrior experience working as a Custodian or similar roleExperience working in a museum or cultural institution preferredAbility to work as part of a team or independentlyCan handle multiple tasks at once and prioritize importance to make sure deadlines are met in a timely mannerStrong verbal and written communication skillsResilient and able to handle high-pressure situations without burning outAbility to stand for the duration of the shift and lift 75 lbs.Complete all required safety training as scheduledComply with The Shed's Uniform Dress Code and maintain a neat and clean appearanceOther duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without noticeAble to work a variable schedule including nights, overnights, weekends, and holidaysWork Environment This job operates in a public assembly facility and professional office environment. Physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with other departments and exchange accurate information; operate a computer and other office productivity machinery; move about the workplace; remain in a stationary position for 10 15 percent of the time; and extend hands and arms in any direction. Must be able to climb ladders and crouch to access tight spaces. Compensation This position is covered under The Shed/32BJ collective bargaining agreement with wages and benefits as outlined by the Agreement.
