Accounting Manager / Controller

Accounting Manager / Controller Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager / Controller is a hands-on finance professional who brings energy, initiative, and innovation to a complex boarding school environment. This role oversees the day-to-day accounting operations, ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, and supports financial sustainability. The Accounting Manager / Controller will play a key role in managing the general ledger, supervising/supporting accounting staff, contributing to audits and compliance, and leading continual improvement of systems and processes, including budget management and financial reporting. Serving as a resource to departments across campus, this individual partners closely with budget holders to provide insight, tools, and guidance that promote sound financial decision-making and stewardship. The ideal candidate has experience in a senior accounting role, preferably in an independent school or nonprofit, excels in both operational execution and process design, and is committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for all interactions with the Business Office. Key responsibilities include general ledger management, financial operations and treasury support, financial audit and Form 990 preparation support, gift and fund management, programmatic support, process improvement and system integrations, internal policies and compliance, team supervision and development, and performing additional duties as assigned by the Director of Finance/Controller. Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in accounting, minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience, prior supervisory experience, strong working knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards, impeccable attention to detail, strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in accounting software and Excel, and commitment to the values of a boarding school environment. Physical conditions include prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, ability to lift up to 15 pounds, ability to access and navigate all areas of the office, ability to read, interpret, and analyze information, and occasional standing, bending, reaching, and walking.
