NC State Dining operates 10 cafes, 3 food courts and 6 dining halls, 4 markets, 1 restaurant, vending, a nutritional counseling service, and a catering department. As a Cook at University Towers, you'll be part of a team that brings quality, care, and consistency to every meal served on campus. In this fast-paced, hands-on role, you'll prepare food using standard recipes, maintain food stations, and ensure a clean, safe kitchen environment. You'll work with a variety of cooking methods-roasting, grilling, frying, steaming, and boiling-and use commercial kitchen equipment with confidence and precision.You'll be responsible for accurate food preparation, maintaining proper product rotation, and supporting smooth service by coordinating with front-of-house staff. Your ability to follow instructions, manage time effectively, and communicate clearly with teammates and supervisors will be key to your success. This role requires physical stamina, including the ability to lift up to 60 pounds, work in hot and cold conditions, and safely handle sharp tools and hot surfaces (all with our without reasonable accommodations).Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:* Requisition products needed to produce recipes.* Help check in, store, and move food supplies prior to and during production.* Work with front of house staff to serve food and coordinate the flow of food from production to customers.* Keep track of food levels and orders during meal time to ensure timely service.* Ensure food prep and staff are ready for service, daily food preparation list are completed, and proper rotation of products.* Demonstrate cooking tasks to student and temporary employees.* Perform necessary cleaning of utensils, workplace, tables, shelves, and equipment and communicate cleaning assignments to other back of house employees.Other Responsibilities* Model the Division's mission and values and foster a positive, cohesive workplace and congeniality among co-workers.* Understand the goals and culture of the organization, and understand how employees' work activities, teamwork, and customer service impact clients. Work with your supervisor and colleagues to understand these goals and the culture.* Adhere to all University policies, procedures, and regulations, and Division standard operating practices and protocols.* Due to operational needs of the NC State Dining department, an employee may be assigned to work in any NC State Dining department including, but not limited to special events.* Perform other duties as assigned to ensure NC State Dining business needs are met.QualificationsMinimum Experience/EducationDemonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.Some positions may require certification by the Department of Correction.Preferred Qualifications* Basic culinary and knife skills, including an understanding of culinary terms and practical application.* Culinary experience in fine dining, fast casual, multi-unit restaurants, or college/university settings.* Previous team leadership experience.* Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn and use email.* Allergen awareness and training.Required License or Certification* ServSafe certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment, and must be maintained as a condition of employment.Valid NC Driver's License required No Commercial Driver's License Required?
