The successful candidate will be a key member of the Executive Team, providing strategic legal guidance to the leadership and program teams. This role is pivotal in enterprise risk management, crisis response, and cross-functional decision-making, and the General Counsel will also serve as Secretary to the Boards. The ideal candidate will have over 10 years of legal experience, with a focus on philanthropic organizations and a strong background in tax-exempt entities, particularly across 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) structures. Experience with government inquiries, congressional investigations, and litigation preparedness is essential, and a background in private foundations, government service, or large mission-driven nonprofits is advantageous. The General Counsel will be expected to apply seasoned in-house judgment and pragmatic risk tolerance to support the Foundation's mission of building an inclusive, multiracial democracy. The role requires a professional who can navigate the complex external environment with a bold, compliant approach, and who is adept at managing legal issues in a way that aligns with the organization's values and goals.
