Staff Data Engineer - Data Platform - (Remote)Location: This position is open to remote work anywhere in the US. Applicants must be willing to travel to the Milliman office in Brookfield, WI as needed and travel nationwide for meetings, conferences, and team events.Duration: Perm / Full TimeRole Summary:This is a senior-level Data Engineering role where you will design, build, and manage large-scale healthcare data platforms using Databricks, AWS, SQL, and Python. You will lead technical decisions, ensure data security and quality, and mentor other engineers.Key ResponsibilitiesDatabricks: Develop Lakehouse and Data Warehouse solutions using Delta Live Tables and Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold).AWS & Infrastructure: Build cloud-based data solutions using AWS, Terraform, and Databricks Asset Bundles.Healthcare Data: Process clinical data using healthcare standards such as FHIR, HL7, and C-CDA.Data Modeling: Design efficient data models using healthcare terminologies such as ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, and RxNorm.Performance & Cost Optimization: Improve pipeline performance, reliability, monitoring, and cloud cost efficiency.Technical Leadership: Lead architecture decisions, collaborate with stakeholders, mentor engineers, and guide projects from design to delivery.Must-Have Technical SkillsDatabricks and AWSSQL, Python, and optionally ScalaETL/ELT pipelines and Delta Live TablesData Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, and Medallion ArchitectureSQL Server, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and DocumentDBHealthcare standards: FHIR, HL7, C-CDAClinical terminologies: ICD-10, SNOMED, LOINC, NDC, RxNormTerraform, GitHub, and Databricks Asset BundlesData security, governance, API development, and performance tuningExperience Required15+ years of relevant data engineering experience.Expert-level Databricks and AWS knowledge.Strong healthcare data management experience.Experience handling large structured and unstructured datasets, including sensitive patient data.Strong technical leadership, communication, and mentoring skills.
