Academic Advisor - Health Sciences
Position summary:The Academic Advisor for Health Sciences provides accurate information in the advising process including the following: career exploration, course selection, graduation requirements, articulation, and transfer information, and career readiness preparation while considering the prominence of student retention for students seeking admittance to their chosen career program. The advisor demonstrates a good understanding of each pathway in the division and the necessary prerequisites for admittance to each selective admission program within the division of Health Sciences. The primary focus of the advisor will be to assist students with selection of course(s) for educational goal, course scheduling and degree audits to ensure progress towards student success, graduation, or re-direction to a different pathway if not selected to program of choice. Retention efforts will include holistic advising, referral to appropriate student supports, provide information regarding program of student interest, proper course sequence, and specific monitoring of progress of student who are not in college level coursework, and guidance to new program options as applicable if student is not chosen for their primary program of interest. The new advisor will collaborate with their fellow divisional advisor(s) and the Director of Academic Advising to focus efforts for student success of students within this division.Position responsibilities:Maintain privacy and student record security standards as set forth by the institution and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)Providing academic, career, and transfer information to a diverse community college student populationParticipating in registration and student orientationAssisting students with the development and updating of an education planAssisting with course selectionsConsulting with students about future education planningMaintaining student success by providing guidance to the student support services KC offersMeeting with students through in-person, virtual, phone advising appointments, and various advising and registration eventsKeeping abreast of current education practices and policiesWorking with appropriate resource persons to provide students with realistic information about coursesProviding accurate realistic information on job opportunities and job placement servicesProviding accurate information on transfer opportunities to universityMinimum Position Requirements: Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degreeMust possess excellent written and verbal communication skills (email, phone, & in-person)Must provide good customer service and interact with students in a positive mannerHave general skills in keyboarding and computer usageHave the ability to multitaskBe well organized and thoroughBe able to work well with little supervisionDeal professionally and courteously with a diverse student and employee populationThis is a 12-month positionSupervisory Responsibilities: 0 Full-Time Direct Reports 0 Part-Time Direct ReportsPhysical Demands and Work Environment: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office and classroom environment. No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.No or very limited exposure to physical risk.Safety: Provide resources for safe operation of units.
