Still University (ATSU) is seeking an exempt, full-time Controller Accounting Operations for the Kirksville, Missouri campus. This position reports to the Assistant Chief Financial Officer. The Controller leads core accounting operations across a complex, multi-campus, not-for-profit graduate health sciences university. Areas of oversight include accounts payable, accounts receivable, procurement, general ledger, grants, endowments, investments, life annuities, gift income, clinic accounting, fixed assets, daily investment and cash management, and institutional tax compliance (e.g., property, sales/use, and non-employee compensation).This role supervises a team of accounting professionals and collaborates with university leadership to ensure sound financial operations and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The Controller plays a key role in supporting the annual external financial audit through detailed reconciliations, audit schedules, and technicalguidance.Duties & ResponsibilitiesLead day-to-day accounting functions, including AP, AR, GL, procurement, fixed assets, grants, investments, gift income, and endowments, along with cash management. Ensure timely and accurate monthly closings and account reconciliations. Oversee compliance with donor restrictions, grant terms, and investment policies. Supervises 4 direct and 8 indirect team members. Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures. Serve as a primary contact for external auditors; prepare audit schedules, documentation, and responses. Partner with clinics, advancement, and grants administration on restricted fund and investment accounting. Ensure accurate and timely preparation, filing, and maintenance of institutional tax documents (property, sales/use, and non-employee compensation) in compliance with state and local regulations. Support implementation and optimization of financial systems and reporting tools. RequirementsEducation & ExperienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field. Minimum 7 years of progressive fund accounting experience in higher education or complex nonprofit. Supervisory experience in accounting or finance required. Direct experience with grant, endowment, and investment accounting, including compliance and reconciliation. Strong working knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting principles, and audit preparation. Understanding of regulations, compliance, documentation, and the specifics of managing grants, such as familiarity with federal audit procedures, and knowledge of the financial and performance reporting requirements. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel. Preferred QualificationsMaster's degree in Accounting or related field (may substitute for 2 years of experience). CPA or CMA designation preferred. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP or comparable ERP. Familiarity with clinic revenue cycles or healthcare-related accounting. Special Characteristics or Personality TraitsAnayltical mindset with exceptional attention to detail. Clear communicator with ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders. Strong time management and organizational skills. Leadership that balances accountability with team empowerment. Commitment to accuracy, compliance, and process improvement.
