Physical Substation Designer
Job Title: Substation DesignerJob DescriptionWe are seeking a highly skilled Substation Designer to manage, design, and perform design checks related to various technical activities. This role involves developing and revising drawings for one-lines, physical arrangements, grounding, and more, using client-specific CAD software. You will create physical layouts and substation designs, integrate them with protection and control drawings, and develop project criteria and design specifications.ResponsibilitiesDevelop and revise drawings for one-lines, physical arrangements, grounding, conduit, lighting, lightning protection, and rigid bus analysis using client-specific CAD software.Create physical layouts and substation designs that integrate with protection and control drawings.Develop project criteria and design specifications, including the overall bill of materials.Design and size auxiliary systems, including AC/DC load centers, batteries, and chargers.Design and size conduit and high voltage conductor.Order long-lead item materials.Perform QA/QC reviews on drawing packages for adherence to client standards.Document QA/QC reviews, maintain record documents, and communicate information to the team.Participate in or develop trainings associated with substation physical design.Provide leadership, coaching, onboarding, and mentoring to a subordinate group when required.Act as a lead or first-level supervisor.Travel to other offices and meet with clients as required, attending project-specific meetings regularly.Manage tasks on multiple projects in accordance with high standards of project management.Assist with the development of the scope of services and cost estimates for Substation and P&C projects.Manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgment to determine optimal solutions.Handle shifting deadlines and scope changes flexibly.Demonstrate resource management skills and the ability to identify project barriers and mitigate them without schedule impacts.Manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under the pressure of deadlines and unexpected developments.Work extended hours or after hours when required.Essential SkillsProficient in the use of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.10+ years of experience in substation design.Ability to manage competing priorities effectively.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with 3D CAD software (Inventor, P4I, etc.) is preferred.Associate's Degree is a plus.Experience supporting IOUs such as FE, PPL, Dominion, Duke Energy, or AEP is a plus.Experience with SDS (Substation Design Suite) is preferred.Work EnvironmentThis is a remote work environment with collaboration among team members conducted through Microsoft Teams.
