The magazine is circulated to resale and MWR agency headquarters, regional offices, and down to store operations and department levels, along with industry professionals. The digital magazine is also distributed to Washington, D.C. policy makers, including Trump administration officials and congressional offices.Published bi-monthly in a fully digital format, Military Commerce Magazine is designed to inform, inspire, and connect the military commerce community. The platform offers modern capabilities, including clickable ads, embedded video, lead capture forms, interactive surveys, and reader insights. With features that go far beyond traditional print, this magazine offers an unparalleled opportunity to tell military commerce stories and connect meaningfully with the military support ecosystem.Position Summary:The ALA is seeking an experienced freelance writer to contribute original, engaging, and wellresearched articles for our bi-monthly Military Commerce Magazine. The writer will cover topics and events related to military commissaries and exchanges, foodservice, lodging, other base support operations, and the broader military quality-of-life ecosystem.Key Responsibilities:• Write clear, compelling, and accurate articles ranging from 200–1,500 words.• Conduct interviews with subject matter experts, ALA members, and military officials (when needed).• Develop story ideas in collaboration with the editorial team or work from assigned briefs.• Ensure factual accuracy and adherence to AP style and ALA editorial standards.• Meet established deadlines and respond promptly to edits and feedback.• Submit accompanying visuals, data, or sidebars when applicable.Qualifications:• Proven experience writing for trade publications, government affairs, defense, or business-related media (preferred but not required).• Strong understanding of military community programs e.g., commissaries, exchanges, MWR, lodging, and other quality-of-life programs (preferred but not required).• Ability to explain complex issues clearly to both military and civilian audiences.• Excellent research, interviewing, and writing skills.• Self-motivated and reliable with strong attention to detail.Preferred Experience:• Background in military reporting, federal programs, or logistics sectors (preferred but not required). • Experience working with nonprofits, associations, or government-affiliated publications(preferred but not required).• Familiarity with DoW, DeCA, AAFES, NEXCOM, MCX, VCS, and MWR structures (preferred but not required).How to Apply:Please submit the following to Vivian Trang, Editor-in-Chief, vtrang@ala-national.org:Email Subject Line: Freelance Writer Application• Resume or professional bio• 2–3 relevant writing samples• LinkedIn Profile (optional)• Brief cover letter outlining your interest in writing for Military Commerce Magazine and topic areas of interest and expertise.
