DescriptionFLSA Employment Status: Nonexempt/Hourly JOB SUMMARY The registered nurse provides specialized nursing care to patients in a comprehensive cancer center setting, including outpatient infusion services, radiation therapy, and other oncology services. This role involves administering treatments, managing patient symptoms, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality, patient centered care. Under general supervision, plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in the unit on a particular shift, in accordance with established patient care plan and philosophy.Reporting Structure: Reports to the Director of Outpatient Clinic and/or Director of Nursing. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTSEducationGraduate of an accredited program in nursing. Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) degree required. Accurately reviews physician's orders and ensures implementation according to schedule.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPATIENT CARE: Monitors patient condition throughout shift according to unit care standards.Demonstrates ability to interpret changes in patient condition and abnormal lab values as evidenced by documentation in the medical record.Works with the patient or family in the development of the plan of care.Implements plan of care within established time frame.Accurately orders appropriate tests on computer terminal.Requests consultation, based on assessment data, to assist in problem solving or facilitation of care as evidenced by random observation and documentation in the medical record.Administers medications, including I.V. fluids, according to policy and procedure.Administers and accounts for all controlled substances according to established policy and procedure.Documents nursing interventions and patient response to care at appropriate intervals during the shift.Administers/assists with chemotherapy medication and oncology education. Assists with radiation administration, scheduling, monitoring, and education. Provides basic teaching if applicable and documents teaching and outcomes in the medical record.Reports changes in the patient's condition and/or adverse patient response to physician and other health care professionals.Provides the best possible nursing care by planning, organizing, and directing the nursing functions of patients on the unit. Makes nursing assignments appropriate to the skill level of employees. Maintains acceptable standards of patient care. Identifies problems and guides personnel to their solution. Accurately and promptly implements physicians' orders. Administers medications and intravenous solutions skillfully and correctly. Maintains the standards of accurate and complete recording and reporting. Arranges to have needed supplies and equipment on hand. Participates in planning changes and improvements. OTHER DUTIES Participates in hospital safety programs. Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies. Assists in reviewing and revising policies and proceduresKeeps Cancer Center Director or Director of Nursing informed of patients, needs, and problems on the nursing unit.
