Freelance Legal Indexer (SME) – US Legal PublishingAre you an experienced Legal Indexer with deep expertise in US legal publishing and a passion for precision? We are looking for a highly skilled Freelance Legal Indexer (SME) to join our growing team and support an exciting PLI project focused on high-quality legal indexing and GenAI refinement initiatives.This is an excellent opportunity to work on sophisticated legal publishing content, collaborate with industry professionals, and play a key role in shaping accurate, client-ready indexing outputs.What You’ll Be Working OnYou will be responsible for delivering high-quality back-matter indexes, refining AI-generated outputs, and ensuring all indexing aligns with established US legal publishing standards and client expectations.Key ResponsibilitiesCreate detailed and accurate back-matter indexes from scratch for legal publications.Perform advanced quality control (QC) and editorial review of revised indexes.Analyze client-approved indexes to identify structure, formatting, and indexing expectations.Develop and document clear indexing guidelines and best practices.Review and refine GenAI-generated indexing outputs to ensure accuracy, consistency, and usability.Collaborate with internal teams to maintain high editorial and publishing standards.What We’re Looking ForRequired ExpertiseStrong understanding of legal indexing principles and US legal publishing standards.Proven experience working on legal or professional publication indexing projects.Ability to independently manage indexing assignments with exceptional attention to detail.Strong analytical and editorial skills.Technical SkillsProficiency in:CindexMicrosoft WordBonus Points If You HavePrevious experience with PLI (Practising Law Institute) or similar legal publishing projects.Familiarity with AI/GenAI-assisted editorial workflows.Experience creating indexing frameworks, standards, or process documentation.Engagement DetailsRole Type: Freelance / ContractEngagement Model: Hourly basisProject Start: Immediate requirementWork Setup: Remote / FlexibleIf you have a keen eye for detail, strong legal publishing expertise, and experience delivering high-quality indexes, we would love to hear from you.
