2026-2027 Secondary School Counselor

Open until filled after 5-day required postingPRIMARY PURPOSE:Provide, as a member of the counseling department staff, a comprehensive guidance program to students and specifically provide services to meet the special needs of the assigned caseload; consult with teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness in helping students' educational, social, and personal needs; and provide support to other school educational programs.QUALIFICATIONS:Preferred Education/Certification:Master's degree from an accredited college or universityValid Texas school counselor certificateMinimum Education/CertificationCurrently enrolled in an approved Educator Preparation Program for School Counseling and eligible for an emergency permitCompleted 24+ graduate level credit hours in guidance and counseling, meeting the state requirement for emergency permitMust be fully certified by the 2027-2028 school yearSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career developmentWorking knowledge of educational programs and the ability to guide students through the programsEffective interpersonal skillsExcellent communications skills- verbal, and writtenAbility to develop a schedule yet maintain flexibilityKnowledge of principals of developmental guidelinesExcellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skillsAbility to instruct students and manage their behaviorAbility to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staffWork Conditions:Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computerand peripherals; Microsoft Office and various computer programsPosture: Prolonged walking, standing and/or sitting; bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twistingMotion: Repetitive hand motions including keyboarding and writing; reachingLifting: Lifting and carrying (less than 40 pounds)Environment: Must be able to work with frequent interruptions and maintain professional demeanor under stress; must be able to work occasionally after regular work hours; some in-district travel; attend off-campus activities, meetings, professional development and functionsMental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to problem solve and make sound judgments in a shortened period of timeRegular attendance is an essential function.Minimum Experience:Two years' successful classroom teaching experience as evidenced by performance evaluationsMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Consult and counsel with students, teachers, parents, and administrative staff concerning student's needs in resolving personal and educational problems.Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data.Maintain student records as required and protect each student's confidentiality.Keep accurate documentation and records.Serve as liaison between school and community.Work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems such as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment.Take an active role in interpreting the special education program to school personnel, parents and community agencies.Participate in the total school guidance program.Participate in continuing study and staff development activities which will improve professional skills.Take an active role in interpreting the school's and district's goals and objectives to students, parents, and the community.Counsel individual students and small groups with presenting needs and concerns.Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services.Develop, implement and teach the district developmental guidance curriculum.Collaborate with other school and district staff to design and/or administer testing and appraisal programs for students.Abide by State and Federal laws, District policies, campus expectations and Texas Educator Code of Ethics.Perform such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
