Eligibility RequirementsEligibility requirements for participation in the examination process consist of the following:United States citizenHigh school diploma or equivalent (GED)Valid Illinois driver's licenseCertification as a Firefighter II/Basic from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal as of December 5, 2025Licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic (EMT-P) by the State of Illinois (or National Certification acceptable by Illinois Department of Public Health) at time of hire. If not certified as EMT-P, must provide proof of current enrollment in an Illinois Department of Public Health approved Paramedic certification program at time of application to participate in the testing process21 years of age at the time of application and under 35 years of age at the time of the written examination (or as otherwise exempt from age limitation by statute)Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) by December 5, 2025 - certification shall not be more than 1 year old as of that dateThe residency requirements can be found here in the current IAFF collective bargaining agreementCopies of the following documents must be uploaded to the online application for it to be considered complete.Birth certificateHigh School diploma *College diploma not acceptable substitute but also include if intend to apply education points for the final eligibility registerDriver's licenseFirefighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter certificationParamedic license or proof of enrollment in paramedicine programMilitary discharge (DD214/Copy4) if applicable and want to apply military points on final eligibility registerCPAT card (or can be brought to the written exam on December 5th or 6th, 2025) Go to the City of St. Charles jobs page to link to our online application system for application instructions and additional information. Applicants are required to be present for all components of the examination process. Scores of the written and oral examinations are computed, and an Initial Eligibility Register is developed. Following the application of preference points, a Final Eligibility Register will be completed by January 2026
