Composites Lab Manager

SUMMARYStructural Composites, Inc.’s (SCI) Sigma Labs provides composite materials testing for government and industry. The Lab also supports SCI’s R&D, design, manufacturing and tech transfer projects as needed with materials testing. The Lab Manager is responsible for leading and supervising the Sigma Labs department of lab techs, engineers and interns. The Lab Manager is also responsible for the quotation of testing requests, review and acceptance of testing contracts (purchase orders), execution of testing, report writing of test results, maintaining and increasing the Lab customers, and creating solutions to technical problems. The position reports to the VP of Engineering. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES- Operate the lab with ethics and integrity according to SCI’s Quality Management System (QMS), policies and procedures.- Serve as point of first contact for testing services.- Determine customer requirements and provide quotes for testing services.- Perform materials testing according to industry and customer standards.- Supervise and train techs, interns, engineers, others in performance of tests.- Supervise, prepare and check technical accuracy of test reports.- Organize lab resources to meet delivery schedules.- In accordance with established procedures, assign job numbers as the customer samples and purchase orders are received.- Communicate with customers and employees to meet the customer’s needs.- Maintain continuous communications to ensure customers are informed and satisfied.- Testing and reporting must be accurate and timely. Notify customers of any schedule delays.- Be prepared for internal and external ISO audits of the lab including its processes, procedures, documentation.- Organize and update the lab procedures and documentation.- Review and implement formal test methods from outside sources (ASTM, ISO, etc).- Review and implement customer-supplied procedures and documents (i.e., PACCAR’s RPT test documents).- Maintain current revisions of test procedures in a “master library”. - Ensure that techs, interns and engineers know where to find the test procedures.- Maintain, as needed, archives of old revisions and/or obsolete documents. - Ensure controlled distribution of documentation that is approved by authorized personnel. - Schedule and maintain calibrations and records for all lab and shop equipment and instrumentation. (Shop equipment = scales, measuring, gauges, etc.).- Direct/manage implementation of an effective lab document control system, thus ensuring integrity of all tasks. - Direct/manage the collection, indexing, filing, and accessing of Lab Quality System (ISO) documentation in a way that ensures ready retrieval upon demand by the System users. - Ensure proper disposition and archival of obsolete/superseded documentation/data. - Manage the maintenance of current/up-to-date revision levels of Lab Quality System documents. - Maintain a master list (or equivalent) of Lab Quality System documentation, identifying current version of each document. - Ensure retention of customer samples, documentation and customer information for prescribed period(s) of time per customer and/or company requirements. - Convey the intent of the Lab Quality System procedures to lab personnel, regarding their compliance with requirements. - Directly involved with interviewing and hiring lab techs.- Conduct training for lab personnel on lab operations, lab and test procedures, and safety.
