Job Title and LocationHardware/Software Systems Engineer – School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United StatesPosition OverviewStanford University invites applications for a one-year fixed-term Hardware/Software Systems Engineer to collaborate with faculty and students, designing and maintaining hardware systems and data processing pipelines for large-scale experimental and theoretical neuroscience projects.In close collaboration with Dr. Karl Deisseroth and the Deisseroth Lab neuroscientists and computational researchers, the Systems Engineer will design and implement hardware and data pipelines to support cutting-edge neuroscience research, including neural interface hardware for the Human Neural Circuitry (HNC) program.By ensuring state-of-the-art hardware supports experiments, the Engineer will advance understanding of brain function.Core DutiesAssemble and maintain hardware/software systems for neuroscience research.Architect a multi-stage pipeline for analyzing and combining heterogeneous datasets that lead to publishable scientific discoveries.Curate and standardize a large database of neurophysiological recordings, producing data summaries and visualizations.Document data organization and internal formatting standards for long-term use.Implement backup frameworks for raw datasets.Ensure compliance with Federal data retention policies.Develop interfaces for accessing and querying datasets.Address code bugs and documentation issues raised by end-users of software.Contribute to training sessions for new users of the software and database.Provide visibility for the group, the data, and your work on external websites.Accelerate data acquisition and analysis using industry best practices to maintain computing infrastructure.Desired QualificationsPossess a MS and/or PhD in a STEM field with a computational component.Be comfortable manipulating data sets, especially large time-series.Comfortable in hardware systems engineering design.Analyze and work with custom coding tools.Proficient in Python and C.Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Team-oriented work style.Education & Experience (Required)Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required)Expertise in designing, developing, testing, and deploying systems and applications.Proficiency in computer hardware assembly.Proficiency with application design and data modeling.Define and solve logical problems for highly technical applications.Strong communication with both technical and non-technical clients.Lead activities on structured team development projects.Select, adapt, and effectively use a variety of programming methods.Knowledge of the application domain.Certifications & LicensesNone.Physical RequirementsPerform desk-based computer tasks.Sit and perform fine manipulation with light grasping.Stand, walk, and write by hand regularly.Use a telephone, lift or carry objects weighing up to 10 pounds.Working Conditions and CompensationMay work extended hours, evenings, and weekends.Salary range: $138,402.00 to $163,985.00 per annum for locations within the 10 Bay Area counties, or $83,041.00 to $163,985.00 for all other regions.Work Standards (from JDL)Interpersonal Skills: Work well with colleagues, clients, and external organizations.Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrate commitment to personal responsibility and safety; communicate safety concerns; use and promote safe behaviors.Compliance: Adhere to all applicable University policies and procedures.Equal Employment Opportunity StatementStanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer.
