OPENS: 05/01/2026CLOSES: Until FilledJOB TITLE: Resident TeacherREPORTS TO: Host Teacher, Principal, UHCL Site Coordinator, and UHCL Field SupervisorDEPT. / SCHOOL: Academic / Bob Hope School/ Cy-FairWAGE / HOUR STATUS: Non-exempt/ Part-Time opportunities / Full-Time opportunitiesPAY GRADE: 2026-2027 Teacher Residency Scale (prorated for number of days employed)PRIMARY PURPOSEThe Resident Teacher (RT) is a student teacher who participates in a yearlong clinical experience under the guidance of a highly effective host teacher (HT). A resident observes and learns on the job in preparation for a teaching career while earning a degree and/or certification from UHCL. For a full school year, the TR works alongside the HT. The TR is actively engaged in as many elements of the classroom as possible from the very beginning of the residency year. The TR will gradually assume greater responsibilities throughout the residency year.QUALIFICATIONSEducation:Enrolled in the UHCL residency program, working towards a teaching certificateComplete all certification requirements by the end of the residency yearStrong work ethic, open to feedback, with a willingness to implement next steps, and a belief that all students can achieveDemonstrated effectiveness working with people who have differing cultural backgrounds and/or personal characteristics, including race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or economic differences, with preference given for experience working successfully with those of similar demographics to the desired school placementKnowledge of subject matter being taughtMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIESResponsibilitiesCo-plan and co-teach with HT and other team members, leading small group instruction, leading instruction without the HT present (with planning support from HTAttend professional development prior to the start of the school year and ongoing throughout the school yearParticipate in team planning, Professional Learning Communities, school-based professional development, campus faculty meetings, and meetings with the Site CoordinatorWork with the HT to monitor and improve instruction with formative and summative assessments, grading, data analysis, and rubrics to identify next stepsAdapt and improve standards-aligned, differentiation-ready lesson plans that motivate strong student learning, after learning to deliver such lessons prepared by the HT and/or experienced team membersManage procedures, supervising students, and developing students' social-emotional skills during transitions, lunch, recess, assemblies, and other activities, and while team teachers plan or deliver instructionEmbrace feedback from HTs and the Field Supervisor before, during, and after informal and formal observationsSubstitute within the school placement one day per week (applicable to candidates in the paid residency)Take responsibility for other non-instructional duties as assigned by the HT and/or campus administratorsPlanning and PreparationUtilize district resources to co-plan, prepare, and internalize lessons with increasing responsibility across the residency yearPlan backward to align all lessons, activities, and assessments with high-expectation standards & curriculumImplement and suggest improvements to instruction that develop higher-order thinking skills and are personalized, reflecting the levels and interests of individual studentsImplement and suggest improvements to assessments that accurately assess student progressClassroom EnvironmentIdentify and address individual students' social, emotional, and behavioral learning needs and barriersHold students accountable for ambitious, measurable, high expectations of behavior and engagementContribute to a culture of respect, enthusiasm, and positive rapportManage student behavior during transitions and less structured time (e.g., recess, lunch, dismissal, etc.)Monitor independent work time in the classroom while HT provides instructionIdentify and suggest ways to engage students in a physical/virtual classroom that include technologyInstructionProvide small-group instruction under the direction and using tools/rubrics of the HT and teamSupervise student skills practice, projects, and digital learningCo-teach with HT for at least 21 hours each week using a variety of strategies to meet student needsLead instruction with growing independence and responsibility across the yearParticipate in instructional planning, data review, and improvement during the yearProfessional ResponsibilitiesSolicit and willingly receive feedback from HT, Principal, SC, and team members to improve professional skillsMeet with HT to ensure alignment of instructional vision and delivery in all classrooms and to troubleshoot students' persistent learning challengesCollaborate with other grade-level team membersParticipate in professional development opportunities at schoolOther* Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.* Perform other duties as may be assigned.WORKING CONDITIONSEquipment Used:Computer with appropriate software, printer, calculator, copier, facsimile machine, overhead projector, and other specialized equipment that is particularly unique to the teaching assignment.Mental Demands:Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress.Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
