CLAIR COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEMBoard Approval June 2021TITLE: Special Education (Instructional) AideJOB GOALS: To assist the special education teacher in providing behavioral, instructional, and support services for students with disabilitiesFLSA STATUS: Non-ExemptREPORTS TO: Principal, Special Education Coordinator, special education teacherMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Must hold a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following qualifications:Successful completion of at least 2 years (48 semester hours) of study at an institution of higher learning ORAn Associate's Degree documented on an official transcript from an accredited institution of higher education ORSuccessfully pass the WorkKeys Assessment with a minimum of Level 3 scores on the following tests: Applied Mathematics; Work Place Documents; and Business WritingGood public relations skillsAbility to understand the unique needs and learning characteristics of studentsAbility to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.Ability to lift 50 poundsAbility to lift/transfer students, ability to restrain students of various ages and sizes (if MCS trained), ability to feed students, and ability or provide physical support when requiredProficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software to perform jobSuch alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may requirePERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, andDemonstrates the ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasksMaintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.Demonstrates and models regular and predictableDemonstrates professionalism in appearance and in attitude at allDemonstrates the ability to use technology for communication asAssists the special education teacher to implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of allAssists the special education teacher in identifying maintenanceSupervises students asAssists the special education teacher to provide appropriate safety procedures in accordance with state and localParticipates in the school improvement process and the implementation of school improvement plans, accreditation and accountability reports, and other required plans asDemonstrates high-expectations for self and for students, and supports an environment that has goals that are both rigorous andDemonstrates initiative to improve job performance and in areas ofReports absences to special education teacher, takes leave, and prepares for substitute in accordance to board policy andAssists the special education teacher in managing student behavior in the classroom and participates in the management of students in other areas of the school and schoolAssists the special education teacher in creating a learning environment that is attractive, safe, and conducive forSupervises extra-curricular activities asSupervises morning, afternoon, detention, etc. asServe as bus aides in emergency situations to maintain safety of students during transportation. This will include riding the bus when a bus aide is notWorks independently and followsParticipates in Managing Crisis Safely Training (MCS) and maintains certificationPerforms duties in a courteous and professionalDemonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas ofProperly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and materials owned by the school system.Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal and the special educationSALARY: Based on the St. Clair County School System Salary ScheduleTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 184 daysEVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
