Associate Attorney

Jacobs Counsel LLC 📍 New York, NY | Hybrid/In-Person | Full-Time | $100,000 – $120,000 Base Jacobs Counsel is a modern boutique law firm built for clients operating in fast-moving industries. We work with founders, athletes, creators, operators, gaming companies, high earners, and families. The work sits at the intersection of business, sports, entertainment, gaming, estate planning, and general counsel advisory. The firm was built from scratch in the age of AI. That means lean systems, modern workflows, flexible pricing, faster execution, and serious legal work without the drag of a traditional law firm structure. We are hiring our first full-time associate attorney. This is not a narrow research-and-review role. You will work closely with the managing attorney across active matters, work directly with clients, draft and negotiate real documents, help improve internal systems, and take ownership of legal work from issue spotting through completion. The right person will get real responsibility early. What You'll Do You will work directly with the managing attorney across the firm's active matters and core practice areas, including: Estate planningOutside general counselGamingSportsEntertainmentGeneral business and commercial matters On any given week, you might draft an estate plan, redline a sponsorship agreement, build an operating agreement for a new venture, research a gaming regulatory issue, prepare a client-facing strategy memo, revise a services agreement, or serve as outside counsel to a founder working through business decisions in real time. You will be expected to own the work assigned to you. That means legal research, drafting, issue spotting, strategy development, client communication, matter management, and follow-through. Because this is a lean team, you will work closely with the managing attorney and handle workflows end to end — not just isolated pieces of a file. You will also help improve the firm's templates, workflows, checklists, research banks, knowledge systems, and AI-assisted processes so work moves faster without sacrificing quality. A note on AI: It is part of how the firm works. You do not need to be a technical expert, but you should be comfortable using tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Legora, or similar platforms to support legal research, drafting, analysis, templates, and workflow efficiency. You should also understand that AI output is not legal work product until a lawyer has reviewed, tested, edited, and owned it. As the firm grows, you may also help manage and coordinate paralegals or other support staff to keep matters moving efficiently. What We're Looking ForWe are looking for an attorney in good standing who wants real ownership, a steep learning curve, and the chance to grow with a firm that is still being built. Admission: New York is strongly preferred. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut are also highly valued. This role is best for an attorney who wants more responsibility than a traditional firm would usually give early on. You do not need to know every practice area on day one. You do need to be careful, curious, adaptable, and willing to learn quickly. We are looking for someone who: Enjoys the actual practice of law. You like drafting, researching, reading statutes, reviewing contracts, spotting issues, and figuring out how the pieces fit together. Can handle complexity without freezing. Our work often involves clients, industries, and fact patterns where the answer is not sitting neatly in a form file.Writes clearly. Plain English. Clean structure. No filler. No hiding behind legalese.Takes ownership. When a matter is yours, you track it, move it, communicate about it, and make sure nothing falls through the cracks.Works well in a lean team. You should be comfortable working closely with the managing attorney, communicating directly, and carrying workflows from assignment through completion. Why This Role Is DifferentYou will not spend years waiting for meaningful work. You will be close to the clients, the strategy, the documents, and the decisions. You will see how matters come in, how they are scoped, how they are priced, how they are managed, and how clients are advised. You will also help improve the systems, templates, and workflows that make the firm faster, more consistent, and easier to scale. This is a strong fit for someone who wants meaningful legal work, close mentorship, client exposure, and a real role in a growing boutique practice. Compensation & BenefitsSpecific benefits will be discussed during the hiring process. The role is based in person at our Manhattan office, with flexibility built in. We expect people to be present often enough to learn from being around the work and the clients, but we are not interested in performative office time. How to ApplySubmit application in the link below, including:ResumeWriting sample — send something you actually drafted if possible.
