THE POSITIONThis position performs lead work over subordinate Corrections Officers or other specialized work in the care, custody and control of inmates.Work Schedule: To be determined. Selected applicant will work a 40-hour work week.Distribution: This posting is restricted to current employees working at SCI Somerset only who successfully took the Corrections Officers 2 exam and received a test score.This position is eligible for retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.This position is not eligible for telework.DESCRIPTION OF WORKDirects subordinate Corrections Officers or performs other specialized work involving the custody, supervisions and non-professional counseling of inmates on an assigned shift. Ensures security is maintained within an assigned area.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary Direct the work of subordinate officers Perform physically demanding tasks, e.g. running, physical control of inmates Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions Work all shifts and posts (except those that require an active PA driver’s license or equivalent) Operate basic office equipment Maintain an active PA driver’s license or equivalent that is specific to the class and type of vehicle to be operated pursuant to post requirements Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification Maintain regular and reliable attendance Use and maintain various equipment and tools of the corrections profession Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform Effectively communicate verbally and in writing Establish and maintain effective working relationships Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) Visually observe inmates’ activities Administer emergency medical assistance to inmates and staff Provide in service and on the job training Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing Maintain weapons qualifications in accordance with DOC Policy 5.1.1, Section 7 Travel as requiredRequired Experience, Training & EligibilityORGANIZATION OR LOCATION RESTRICTIONS:This posting is restricted to current employees working at SCI Somerset only who successfully took the Corrections Officers 2 exam and received a test score.RECRUITMENT METHOD:Applicants must meet one of the following recruitment methods to be considered for this vacancy: Civil Service Seniority CertificationYou must be eligible for selection in accordance with Merit System Employment Regulations.ELIGIBILITY – ALL APPLICANTS: Meet the minimum experience and training (MET’s) for the job:One year as a Corrections Officer 1 (Commonwealth job title); orTwo years of experience in corrections security work in a Pennsylvania state or county corrections facility. ( Note : Persons seeking employment under this option will be required to successfully complete, or have completed, a training program conducted by the Department of Corrections.)Please Note : Certain SCI Corrections Officer positions will require applicants to have and maintain an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent. 2 .
