Controller

Position Overview:Our client is a well-established nonprofit organization seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the organization’s accounting and financial operations, with a strong emphasis on construction/project accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands both the accounting side of a nonprofit organization and the financial complexities associated with construction and development projects.Key Responsibilities:Oversee all accounting operations, including GL, AP, AR, payroll, cash management, and reconciliationsLead the month-end and year-end close processPrepare accurate financial statements, management reports, budgets, forecasts, and cash-flow projectionsOversee construction and project accounting, including job costing, project budgets, expenditures, and commitmentsMonitor construction costs and ensure expenses are properly coded and allocatedPerform budget-to-actual and variance analysis across projects and departmentsMaintain strong internal controls and accounting policies in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standardsManage restricted and unrestricted funds, grants, and program-related financial activityAssist with grant accounting, reporting, and compliance requirementsOversee fixed assets, depreciation, accruals, prepaid expenses, and balance sheet reconciliationsManage cash flow and provide financial analysis to senior leadershipLead the annual audit and tax preparation processDevelop and manage the annual operating budgetPartner with construction, operations, development, and executive leadership teamsIdentify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting, and financial controlsSupervise, mentor, and develop accounting staffPrepare financial reporting and presentations for executive leadership and Board-level stakeholdersIdeal CandidateBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field7+ years of progressive accounting experiencePrevious Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experienceExperience in nonprofit accounting strongly preferredConstruction, real estate development, affordable housing, or project-based accounting experience preferredStrong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit financial reportingExperience with fund accounting, grants, restricted funds, and/or donor-related accountingStrong understanding of job costing, project accounting, budgeting, and forecastingAdvanced Excel and ERP/accounting system experienceStrong leadership and team-management skillsExcellent analytical and problem-solving abilitiesComfortable presenting financial information to executive leadership and a BoardMission-driven, collaborative leader who can balance hands-on accounting with strategic financial oversight
