The Network Engineering and Architecture team within ITS is responsible for designing and maintaining all computer networks across the university, ensuring optimal performance and security. About The Role The University of Michigan's Information and Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer Lead to join the Network Engineering and Architecture team. This leadership role involves overseeing the Wi-Fi group, providing expert technical guidance, and leading complex network projects focused on Wi-Fi network technology. The successful candidate will collaborate with various IT teams to develop and implement advanced network systems, ensuring robust and reliable connectivity across the campus. Responsibilities include designing, supporting, and operationalizing new technology deployments, resolving network issues, and contributing to strategic planning initiatives. The role offers a hybrid work environment with occasional in-person days in Ann Arbor, providing a dynamic and collaborative work setting. Reporting directly to the Network Planning Manager, this position is pivotal in maintaining the university's cutting-edge network infrastructure and supporting its digital transformation goals. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience Current HPE/Aruba Professional level certification for Campus Access Minimum of 6 years of experience with HPE/Aruba Wi-Fi systems, specifically managing AOS 8 or newer At least 4 years of relevant experience demonstrating confidentiality, customer service, troubleshooting, and organizational skills in network hardware and software support Proven knowledge of computer operating systems, Python programming, computer networking, and radio frequency fundamentals Experience in project goal setting, problem-solving, and establishing standards for wireless network activities Understanding of TIA/EIA standards and practices related to telecommunications and networking Knowledge of twisted pair and fiber optic wiring related to customer premise wiring and networking Ability to lead project teams effectively and coordinate multiple tasks across departments Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills Responsibilities Provide technical leadership for the design, support, and operational deployment of new Wi-Fi technology and products across the university campus Offer expert consulting to project managers and stakeholders to develop optimal network design and deployment strategies Collaborate with various IT teams to evaluate and recommend new products and technologies, conducting research to support informed decision-making Represent the team on university committees and facilitate seminars to share knowledge and best practices Participate in higher education networking groups, such as the BTAA Network Group, to stay current with industry trends Assist in strategic planning and setting the technical direction for network infrastructure initiatives Design networks based on established guidelines, customer requirements, and technical standards Review network design documents, bills of materials, project costs, drawings, and configuration specifications Develop detailed documentation for network designs, including RF and wired network layouts, and CAD details Create procedural documentation and guidelines for team members and other technical staff Develop RFPs, review bids, and assist in bidder selection processes Guide lower-level engineers through root-cause analysis of network infrastructure failures Provide accurate project estimates, identify potential risks, and communicate issues to management proactively Benefits Generous paid time off and leave policies Retirement plan with two-for-one matching contributions and immediate vesting Comprehensive health insurance options Life insurance and long-term disability coverage Flexible spending accounts for healthcare and dependent care expenses Dental and vision insurance plans Parental and maternity leave policies Opportunities for hybrid or remote work, subject to departmental approval Equal Opportunity The University of Michigan is an equal employment opportunity employer.
