It includes 17 patient rooms divided into zones to test various room designs, equipment, or processes. The primary patient population consists of adult medical-surgical patients. Future plans include transitioning into an adaptable care model encompassing Medical-Surgical and Progressive Care levels. This unit does not care for labor and delivery or pediatrics. There is a primary nursing care model in which one nurse is assigned to a group of patients. The nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 during the day and 1:5-6 at night. Current innovations include virtual nursing, virtual sitters, and an interactive patient experience platform. Other projects involve a real-time location system and facility design variations such as modular interior walls and ceiling lifts. Responsibilities may require floating to meet facility needs and additional units. The unit works with a care team that includes care techs, transport teams, paramedics, and, on some floors, LPNs. A nicotine-free policy is strictly enforced. Travelers must work weekends (four shifts out of eight possible in a four-week period) and two out of three major holidays.
