The ideal profile includes:Recent Pharma or Biotech Lab EHS Experience — Actively working in or having recently left a pharma or biotech R&D lab environment within the last 1–3 years, with a well-rounded background across EHS programs, not limited to one areaSite EHS Program Ownership — Has served as a site EHS lead, coordinator, or point of contact with direct program responsibility, not solely in a support or technician capacityCalifornia-Based & No Relocation Required — Currently living and working in California, ideally within the Bay Area. Candidates who would need to relocate will not be considered at this timeCalOSHA & California Regulatory Familiarity — Working knowledge of CalOSHA regulations and general California environmental health and safety requirements. Mindful and diligent with documentationSummary of position:Under the direction of the Research and Development Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) management, this individual will provide guidance on EHS matters and EHS training to employees and contractors in Client South San Francisco.The individual will communicate and collaborate with local EHS team members and stakeholders to implement and align programs and EHS policies which drive change and build a positive safety culture at our site.Required:Safety and osha regulations knowledge and experience is required.Actively participate in the analysis of EHS problems, concerns or program gaps addressed by stakeholders or the local EHS team. Contribute to the discussion with the local EHS staff and/or stakeholder by providing EHS ideas or recommendations to mitigate the risk or resolve the problem.Conduct risk assessments of site/lab processes and implement continuous improvement actions which will ensure EHS compliance of our site operations in a proactive manner.Major responsibilities:List all major responsibilities of the position in order of importance and priority to the overall job. Each supports the overall purpose of the job.Develop, revise, and prepare EHS training content and standard operating procedures based on local state requirements and internal company EHS requirements.Support the local EHS team with EHS Incident Investigations and assist with implementing appropriate EHS corrective and preventive actions and recommendations.Lead and conduct EHS risk assessments of site/lab processes and equipment (e.g. machine guarding survey, office ergonomic evaluation) and engage with stakeholders on developing appropriate actions and recommendations to mitigate risk.Research and recommend EHS technical guidance or solutions to assure compliance with regulatory and internal company requirements and to address the EHS problem or concern or program gap.Conduct laboratory safety inspections, document the inspection findings and recommendations, and issue inspection report to the respective stakeholders.Assist with EHS record retention and archiving needs per AbbVie internal records information management requirements.Conduct an audit of existing laboratory signage for accuracy and compliance with local Hazard Communication requirements.Support tasks related to maintaining compliance with our local Emergency Preparedness program requirements (e.g. updating emergency response volunteer roster, conduct training on basic site emergency response procedures, review and update emergency response training content, support emergency drill events)Nature and scope:Scope of Authority:Job Accountability:This position is responsible for helping the local EHS team with ensuring safety of the employees, assuring a safe working environment, protecting the environment and the property, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting the team with regulatory inspections conducted by local agencies (e.g. San Mateo County Environmental Health, local Certified Unified Protection Agency inspections).The incumbent is expected to determine the adequacy of existing activities and facilities in terms of acceptable safety risk. The incumbent is also providing EHS technical experience that is within the scope of the job responsibilities noted in this description.The incumbent is expected to report to the local EHS team and leadership a process or operation that will put in danger the life of employees or that could affect the property or equipment.Qualifications:Education:Bachelor's degree in an EHS-related field (industrial hygiene, occupational safety, biology, chemistry, or engineering)Experience:At least one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience managing environmental, health and safety programs to assure compliance with local California state and county regulations and company policies.Mental and Physical Abilities:Must be eager to participate in the development of new ideas and/or improvements of existing ones. Should have good situational awareness and be mentally alert with a good capacity for evaluation, analysis and problem solving. Must have the ability to focus, develop plans, use judgment to accomplish results, and good interpersonal skills.Physical; Walking, sitting and standing.Ability to work with computers and integration of information tracking systems. Remote work or hybrid work schedule is not applicable to this contractor position.External/Internal Contacts:External:Local, State and Federal Inspectors – provide support to the local EHS team with onsite regulatory inspections/visits.This can include but is not limited to preparing documentation requested by the inspector or by the local EHS front room inspection lead or helping the site be inspection ready (e.g. review of safe working conditions, waste management conditions, etc.).Internal:Daily interaction with local EHS staff, site leadership, EHS leadership, laboratory and vivarium personnel, facilities/engineering personnel and hourly personnel. Implement audits, define, establish, and follow-up environmental, safety, and health corrective and compliance activities.Provide EHS technical assistance and information to Abbvie management, hourly personnel and contractors. Interact with AbbVie EHS professionals.
