Security Manager

ResponsibilitiesResponsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for library users and staff in library buildings and on library property. Oversees the activities of the Security Officers. Utilizes independent judgment, initiative, and discretion to plan, organize and assign work. Responsible for scheduling and supervising all Security staff. Resolves problem situations, interprets library policy, and enforces the Standards of Behavior. Responsible for disaster response and emergency planning, including staff training for weather, medical and other emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to the Executive Director.Supervises the work of security staff; hires, trains; arranges schedules; monitors workflow; reviews work; conducts performance evaluations; models expected behaviors and competencies;Resolving problem situations, interprets library policy, and enforces the Standards of BehaviorProvides high level customer service and offers general assistance to patrons in the use of the library facilitiesHelps patrons with lost personal items, illnesses, or emergency situationsUses video security system to review security incidentsActs proactively to defuse potentially disruptive situations, including escorting disruptive patrons from library premisesRecognizes and refers situations that could best be handled by law enforcementEscorts disruptive patrons from library premisesPatrols the interior of the library and exterior property regularlyManages inventory of library keys for locations and all staff; manages access to staff entrancesWorks with the Manager of Facilities to ensure building safety and security at all library locations, including reporting maintenance matters when observed at various locationsEnsures compliance with fire code, OSHA, and other safety regulationsDesignated staff liaison with alarm vendor; on call list for building alarm reportsAssists during emergencies, including guiding library patrons to shelter areasCompletes incident reports as required and maintains accurate records of incident reports, accident reports and banned patronsLiaison with local law enforcement agenciesParticipates in departmental and library-wide training and activities, including safety trainingResponsible for disaster response, safety and emergency planning, including staff training for weather, medical and other emergenciesMaintains the Emergency Response ManualMay be required to work in multiple locations and on any of the 7 days of the workweek (Sunday – Saturday)Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesAbility to gain thorough knowledge of Peoria Public Library's policies and proceduresAbility to act as a representative of Peoria Public Library to the publicEffective decision-making skills with strong customer focusAbility to effectively supervise and motivate staffAbility to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphereAbility to communicate respectfully and effectively with a diverse community of customersAbility to exercise authority appropriate to various circumstancesAbility to remain calm under pressure, especially in confrontational and emergency situationsAbility to be trained and certified in CPR and use of AEDAccurate computer and keyboarding skillsExcellent oral and written communication skillsStrong commitment to public serviceAbility to work with library customers and staff in a friendly and efficient mannerAbility to maintain a varied schedule, including day, evening, and weekend rotationsProficiency with workplace productivity software, including skills in Microsoft Office SuiteAbility to stand and walk for long periodsAbility to obtain a valid IL driver's licenseEducation and ExperienceAssociate's degree or two years of collegeTwo years of law enforcement or security experience in library, retail, or public safety settingSupervisory experience preferredAny equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilitiesPhysical and Environmental ConditionsWork requires routine physical effort in the handling of light to moderately heavy materials of up to 50 pounds. May require standing for long periods of time and frequent stooping and bending.Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, libraries, classrooms or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire and building safety regulations and traffic signals when driving. Work may involve routine exposure to chemicals and paint.
