Self-Hired Direct Support Professional

Job Overview: Work with a young adult who has Autism Spectrum Disorder, so they can live as independently as possible. The staff will prompt and/or provide assistance with tasks of daily living. Some examples are grocery shopping/budgeting, laundry, cooking/meal preparation, and creating a schedule to work on skills consistently. The individual is very motivated to get out into the community by volunteering and integrating his skills into the community. They are very handy and love to tinker with doorknobs and technology/electricity. They also enjoy video games. Staff will work on/encourage the individual to talk about their interests with others in the community. The job will also involve taking the individual out into the community to expose them to new opportunities and classes. Staff will work with the individual to reach their personal goals. The individual is in need of staff to take him to volunteer on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 pm till 4 pm and possibly Tuesday 7-8 pm for a group in Ithaca which is about a 30-minute drive from their home. The staff is able to work up to 30 hours per week for $25 per hour, but the hours are decided by the individual and their family. We are looking for someone who has experience with people that have developmental disabilities, whether it be on a personal level or professional level. The hired staff will be a contracted employee of AIM Independent Living Center. The family of the individual that the staff will work with are the ones in charge of hiring, firing, setting the pay, and the schedule. AIM Independent Living Center will be responsible for benefits and payroll. Responsibilities: Assist client with daily living skills. Take/accompany the client to social activities, recreational outings, and volunteering. Need to be able to use a smartphone for documenting services. Work with the Circle of Support (COS) to provide comprehensive support for the client. Effective communication skills. Ensure client safety and maintains a safe environment. Foster positive relationships between the individual served and the Circle of Support (COS). Preferred Qualifications: Candidates ideally possess experience or knowledge in the following areas: Background in special education or related fields is a plus. Skills in assisting individuals with various challenges while maintaining a positive environment.
