Art Director/Production Manager
The ideal candidate will have strong creative skills and a portfolio of work demonstrating their passion for design, visual storytelling, editorial layout and typography. The candidate must have proven experience as a leader working with print media as well as digital. The candidate must be consistently flexible to restructure the publication as needed, adapt to any changes in content or advertising, and adhere to any special requests from clients or editorial. Must be available and able to work within our tight print deadline schedule. This position is in-office M-F.
Responsibilities:
Conceptualize, create, source and/or commission engaging illustrations/photos/graphics for covers, editorial, web, social media, marketing and promotions.
Work with sales team to create promotional materials and ads, share proofs for clients, as well as troubleshooting and archiving camera-ready ads provided by clients
Work with editorial team for all page design and proofing process
Collaborate with editorial and advertising to create weekly dummies for the publication based on ad revenue and content
Work efficiently to meet tight deadlines and deliver high-quality results without compromising on creativity
Work closely with pre-press every week and deliver flawless files for print
Weekly meetings with the leadership team to forecast, strategize and plan for future issues and company goals
Maintain awareness of current industry and technology standards, social media and design trends
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related field
5+ years of professional work experience
Expert level in Adobe Creative Suite (primarily InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)
Experience using Mac platform, DocsFlow, Google Suite and Dropbox
Strong creative and conceptual thinking, typography and design skills
Experience working with and commissioning freelance illustrators, photographers and other vendors
Provide art direction and thoughtful critique
Proven experience with print media and process
Desired experience with illustration and photography
Strong project management skills, prioritization, organization, and ability to efficiently multi-task
Clear verbal and written communication
Collaborate across teams to produce impactful local journalism
Exhibit a deep interest in current affairs and local news, arts, culture and events
Portfolio of work required
