We will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our future.ScopeThe Yosemite Program Manager is responsible for welcoming and educating Yosemite National Park visitors to the Yosemite Conservation Heritage Center (YCHC) each season, starting on the first Wednesday in May. The manager is also responsible for training, scheduling, and supervising Sierra Club volunteers at the YCHC. Volunteers rotate in groups of 4 to 6 each week and are interpretive hosts within the YCHC. The manager ensures YCHC weekend educational programming is presented on Friday and Saturday evenings in May and June, as scheduled. The manager oversees and undertakes all aspects of the YCHC facility including the library and children's corner; the maintenance of the building; and purchases supplies and materials for use within the YCHC.Job ActivitiesProgram Docent – greets visitors and represents the Sierra Club in a professional manner that reflects the values of the Sierra Club. Educates the public about the Sierra Club's history and future and conservation goals, projects and campaigns when appropriate.Coordinates weekend presenter programs when scheduled, including promoting, hosting, operating audio/visual equipment.Logs all relevant information that occurs at the YCHC to be compiled for the year‐end report, i.e. visitation numbers, changes in the program, significant events and purchases, etc.Volunteer Coordination and Training – trains, revises weekly schedules, and supervises Sierra Club volunteers (rotating 4‐6 volunteers each week), starting in late‐April, Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am until 4 pm; emails incoming volunteers a week before they arrive with their schedule, park pass, and other pertinent information; researches, prepares, updates, and maintains interpretive materials for volunteer use; leads in‐camp meetings every Saturday evening; leads an orientation training for volunteers new to the YCHC program Sunday mornings before their first shift.Oversees all functional aspects of the YCHC – opens the center on the first Wednesday in May; plans and communicates with manager and critical stakeholders when plans change due to unforeseen circumstances; schedules, stocks and manages three campsites in Lower Pines Campground, provides volunteers with information on campsites, enforces NPS rules for the campsites and campground, and promotes low‐impact use; maintains a working relationship with YNP staff; attends monthly IMT meetings; ensures the YCHC stays clean; purchases office and cleaning supplies if needed.Safety Management – responds to emergencies in Yosemite National Park, the YCHC, and the three campsites; attends National Park Service meetings regarding floods, fires, rock fall, and road closures; trains volunteers and program presenters on emergencies and possible evacuations; knows evacuation plans, maintains first‐aid kits, and provides incident reports as needed; remains on‐call overnight and weekends for present volunteers; works with Sierra Club Outings Safety on prevention, incidents, and related issues to ensure staff and volunteer safety in accordance with Sierra Club and NPS policies; maintains a safe and inclusive working and living environment for staff, volunteers, and park visitors.Community Education – works with local Chapter staff, volunteer entities, and partners to plan and implement educational, visibility, media, and community outreach events; identifies, develops, and supports volunteer leaders and builds grassroots power to advocate for accurate representation of Yosemite History; recruits, engages, trains, and motivates people to influence decision makers and help achieve this goal; identifies and builds strong relationships with key people of influence, especially from frontline communities.QualificationsDetailed knowledge and/or expertise in at least one field directly connected to curating the YCHC (natural sciences, history, environmental studies, museum studies, experiential education, social justice, indigenous studies, or equivalent).1+ year of experience developing educational programs and working with the public (e.g., community speaker series, visitor center, government agency).Excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills in working with volunteers from diverse identities; experience building trust and positive group dynamics.Ability to work in person at the center Wednesday through Sunday, including weekends and holidays as needed.Equity Analysis and Practice – awareness of how racism and other forms of oppression affect relationships, systems, and culture; experience working effectively with colleagues across group identities.Committed to continuous learning and personal growth in systems of oppression; ability to examine privilege and power and adjust behavior.Uplifting, constructive, can‐do attitude with sense of humor and authentic kindness.Preferred QualificationsGeneral knowledge of the Sierra Club mission, values, campaigns, programs, conservation issues, and board guidance.General knowledge of Yosemite National Park, including roads, facilities, shuttle service, partners, and programs.Personal vehicle, valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and ability to drive mountain roads.Can transition from remote work to on‐site work in the YCHC.Willingness to clean and maintain the YCHC.Knowledge and experience with safety and risk‐management protocols (e.g., fire department, emergency response, Wilderness First Responder certification).Proficiency in a second language.Compensation and Benefits$30 – $30 per hour.
