This position assists the surgical team through the use of equipment and instrumentation to ensure that the operating room environment is safe. It is essential to have all required equipment available and functioning properly. Discuss any special needs with the surgeon before surgery and scrub in to prepare instruments adequately. Prepare the operative site by aseptically cleaning and patient clipping as needed. Maintain the instrument table in an organized and comprehensive manner to avoid damage to instrumentation. Identify damaged or incomplete trays and rectify discrepancies immediately or contact those who can help to avoid delays or injury. Set up the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules. Arrange sterile set up of instrument table supplies and equipment required for specific procedures, carefully selecting and opening only needed supplies. Ensure the proper functioning of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgical procedures. Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and miscellaneous items according to established policies and procedures. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team staff during surgeries. Pass sterile supplies and equipment to surgeons and assistants during procedures and hold retractor devices as required. Assist the surgical team with draping and positioning the patient. Receive surgical specimens following specimen protocol and pass the specimens off the sterile field to the circulating nurse while verifying the source of the specimen. Assist with the placement of surgical dressings to the operative site following surgical case completion. Disassemble surgical instrumentation at the end of the procedure and dispose of sharps, fluids, and waste appropriately. Prepare soiled instrumentation for proper transportation to the decontamination area. Ensure cleaning, decontamination, sterilization, maintenance, and preparation of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies for distribution. Clean the operating room following each case and return equipment to appropriate storage areas. Follow infection control policies and guidelines for perioperative practice. Ensure proper orientation and knowledge of all equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use. Knowledge of infection prevention and regulatory sterilization standards is required. Familiarity with the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique is essential. Knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures is important for assisting the surgical team with invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are necessary to interact with the surgical team. Occasional exposure to chemical or radiation hazards may occur. The ability to competently perform all the essential duties of the position is a basic requirement. Demonstrated commitment to effective customer service delivery and the ability to work productively as a member of a team are also required.
