This role requires demonstrated proficiency in GIS as a foundational skill, combined with substantive experience in either traffic engineering or travel demand modeling, and a genuine interest in building competency in both over time. We're looking for someone who doesn't have to choose a lane - or at least is ready to learn the other one. This is a mid-level position, with the potential to come in at a lower senior level depending on the candidate's experience. The candidate is expected to lead and execute GIS analysis independently, contribute meaningfully to either traffic engineering or travel demand modeling work, and support the development of skills in the other area under senior guidance. Depending on the candidate’s experience, this position could include independently leading either traffic engineering or travel demand modeling tasks and also providing mentorship/training opportunities for junior-level staff. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:GIS & Spatial AnalysisLead the collection, compilation, cleaning, review, editing, and analysis of geospatial data from a variety of transportation planning and traffic engineering sourcesDesign, develop, and maintain GIS maps, interactive web maps and spatial visualizations, online dashboards, and storymaps using tools such as ArcGIS and Leaflet (R or JavaScript)Automate GIS analysis and spatial data processing workflows using ArcPy, R, and/or PythonEstablish and oversee quality control processes for spatial datasets to ensure data quality, integrity, and consistency across projectsServe as an internal resource for GIS best practices, tool selection, and workflow development; provide guidance and review for junior GIS staffPreferred software (not required): ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, QGIS; ArcPy or Python for spatial automation Traffic EngineeringDevelop design traffic forecasts to support roadway planning, design, and project developmentPrepare design traffic diagrams using MicroStation to support roadway and intersection design projectsConduct traffic engineering studies and analyses, including corridor studies, intersection analyses, and multimodal evaluationsCalculate and evaluate project performance metrics relevant to traffic operations and safetyTranslate technical traffic engineering analysis into clear presentations and memos for clients and non-technical stakeholdersPreferred software (not required): MicroStation, HCS, VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, ICE Travel Demand ModelingDemonstrate understanding of, or a strong willingness to develop proficiency in, the foundational principles of 4-step travel demand models and/or activity-based modelsSupport model development, validation, and calibration, as well as model application for analysis, forecasting, and scenario testingSupport long-range transportation planning and multimodal analyses using modeled dataPreferred software: Cube (preferred); TransCAD, VISUM (a plus) Required QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field; Master's Degree preferredPE license, or ability to attain within 2 years4+ years of professional experience, including strong, demonstrated proficiency in GIS analysisBackground in either travel demand modeling or traffic engineering, with demonstrated willingness and interest in developing skills in both over time Preferred QualificationsTransportation or City/Regional Planning education (in addition to an Engineering degree)Experience in both travel demand modeling and traffic engineeringStrong communication and writing skills, including an ability to convey technical concepts to audiences with varying levels of technical background
