Teacher/Professional - Special Education - Deaf Education Teacher Grades PK-6Job Number 0000764005Start DateOpen Date 02/01/2026Closing Date 05/30/2027ROLE AND PURPOSE: The primary responsibility of the deaf education teacher is to provide academic instruction which will enable the deaf / hearing impaired student(s) to access the curriculum as determined by the Admission, Review and Dismissal committee with an emphasis on language and communication skill development.QUALIFICATIONS:Education/CertificationBachelor's degree from accredited university requiredMaster's degree preferredValid Texas teaching certificate in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (EC-12) and GeneralistTASC (Texas Assessment of Sign Communication) or equivalentSPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Knowledge of Deaf / Hard of Hearing instructional services including:Auditory/listening skills trainingOral speech modeling and reinforcementVocabulary and language development using visual modality and oral / aural methods ie. Visual PhonicsUse of Total Communication to provide instruction through SEE sign language modalityUse and maintenance of amplification equipmentGeneral knowledge of academic instruction in math, reading, writing, social studies and scienceAbility to instruct students and manage their behaviorStrong organizational, communication and interpersonal skillsMAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Instructional StrategiesDevelop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation asPrepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learningPresent subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies and administrativePlan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of studentsConduct regular assessments of students as indicated by the RDSPD, Regional Day School Program for the Deaf.Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).Work with other members of the RDSPD staff to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to districtCommunicate with students in signed English during instruction.Provide communication access to students who are deaf / hard of hearing at all times (interpreting).Provide an oral emphasis for students as specified in the IEP suing oral/aural instructional techniques.Provide instruction in the State Adopted Extended Core Curriculum for students receiving instruction from a teacher of the deaf / hard of hearing.Plan and supervise assignments of teacher aide(s), interpreter(s) and volunteer(s).Use instructional technology to strengthen teaching/learning Student Growth and DevelopmentHelp students analyze and improve study methods andConduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informalParticipate as a member of the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee.Document student progress on IEP's.Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal.Be a positive role model for students, support mission of school Classroom Management and OrganizationCreate classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development ofManage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and studentTake all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials andAssist in selection of books, equipment and other instructional CommunicationEstablish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, RDSPD administrator, principals andMaintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents and communityProvide consultation and collaborate with ECI staff, otologists, audiologists, sign language interpreters on staff and from agencies, classroom teacher assistants, SSA member districts and AISD support staff including RDSPD administrative staff.Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and Professional Growth and DevelopmentParticipate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills:SEE SkillshopDeaf Education Professional Learning CommunitiesVisual Phonics (as opportunities arise)Statewide Conference for the Deaf (as opportunities arise)OtherKeep informed of and comply with the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf Shared Service Arrangement.Keep informed of and comply with state, district and school regulations and policies for classroomCompile, maintain and file all reports, records and other documentsAttend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as requiredNOTE: In order to minimize current campus disruption, current teachers and classroom assistants may only apply to job postings if the position is a promotion. A promotion is defined by an increase in salary grade or incremental stipend. This does not apply if the transfer window is open.Duty Days 187Additional Job InformationThis position receives a $3,000/year stipend.This is a pooled position. It is open year round even if no current openings exist.
