A temporary equipment mechanic performs diagnostic, maintenance and repair services on light and heavy city vehicles and equipment, such as automobiles, storm/sewer trucks, aerial bucket trucks, dump trucks shuttle buses, construction equipment, lawn mowers, small equipment and stationary generators; and performs other duties as assigned. The temporary equipment mechanic performs a range of skilled tasks requiring journey level mechanical ability and aptitude. Principles and techniques of preventative maintenance and inspection. Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work. Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work. Applicable policies and procedures relevant to assigned area of responsibility. Principles and practices of gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair. Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment and basic applications. Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting. Safe driving rules and practices. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Understand and follow policies and procedures, pertaining to assigned programs and functions. Operate computerized diagnostic equipment. Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed. Make accurate arithmetic calculations. Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines. Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equipment Mechanic Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic experience. Licenses and certifications: Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver license and a satisfactory driving record. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Class "B" driver license with air brakes and tanker endorsements within 1,040 hours (the equivalent of six months if working full-time) of employment. Possession of Forklift Certification within 1,040 hours (the equivalent of six months if working full-time) of employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, passenger transport endorsement (P) for fifteen passengers or less including driver within 2,080 hours (the equivalent of one year if working full-time) of employment. Benefits Salary Equipment Mechanic: $39.94- $48.54 per hour These are non-benefited temporary positions. A temporary employee may not work more than 1000 hours per year and will receive sick leave in accordance with State Law.
