Assistant General Counsel - Employment
Sumitomo Electric U.S.A. Holdings, Inc. (SEUHO) seeks a sophisticated and experienced attorney to fill the position of Assistant General Counsel – Employment in SEUHO’s Legal Department, which oversees legal and compliance issues for the Sumitomo Electric Group companies operating in North and South America.
The primary responsibilities of the Assistant General Counsel include providing leadership and oversight on labor and employment matters for the SEG companies in the Americas, handling such matters for the SEG companies in the U.S., furthering the growth of the employment law function, overseeing employment‑related litigation, drafting company policies and agreements regarding human resources and employment law matters, conducting employment‑law related training, and providing day‑to‑day employment counseling and advice. The role also involves working closely with the Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. (SEI) Legal and Human Resources Departments and other regional departments to assist the global company in developing and supporting programs and initiatives that incorporate best practices across the global organization.
Located near Los Angeles, California (Torrance), this hybrid position requires a mix of office and remote work and reports to the General Counsel of the Legal Department in SEUHO.
Qualifications
J.D. from an ABA‑accredited law school and membership in good standing with a state bar.
At least 15 years of relevant employment and labor experience, preferably including experience in both a major law firm and a corporate law department.
Ability to determine employment‑law compliance strategy and develop best practices for operations in the region, including diversity and inclusion, training, and policies.
Experience advising on labor and employment issues such as hiring, leaves, accommodations, discipline, terminations, wage and hour compliance, investigations, discrimination, retaliation, harassment, performance management, workforce restructuring, and employee relations.
Experience leading negotiations and strategy for pre‑litigation claims, responding to administrative charges, and overseeing outside counsel on employment and general litigation matters.
Ability to identify and prioritize employment‑law issues, work with management to determine direction, and implement solutions.
Ability to collaborate with business stakeholders and HR professionals to understand processes, applications, and technologies to mitigate risk.
Experience in developing, drafting, promulgating, and maintaining policies, standards, and procedures in labor and employment areas and integrating these requirements into global operations.
Regular communication of significant matters, litigation trends, and employment‑law updates to internal stakeholders and senior management.
Effective collaboration across teams and companies to educate employees about legal and compliance risks.
Experience developing and delivering training in employment law and related compliance areas.
Ability to supervise and work with outside counsel to identify and minimize business risks and achieve strategic objectives cost‑effectively.
Willingness to supervise in‑house colleagues and perform additional responsibilities and special projects.
Willingness to work variable hours and travel as needed, domestically and internationally.
The base salary range for this position is $250,000.00 to $270,000.00 annually. Compensation may vary based on experience, qualifications, skills, competencies, and location. The base pay is one part of the total compensation and benefits package and the role may be eligible for discretionary bonuses or incentives.
