The mission of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS) is to provide coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health, surgical, intensive and extended care to Veterans in a timely, accessible and cost‑effective manner. Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia
Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to board certification
Faculty status may require board certification for physicians involved in academic training programmes
Residency programs approved by ACGME or AOA, or non‑U.S. residencies followed by at least five years of verified practice in the United States, are acceptable if the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems the applicant fully trained
Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) may be appointed as interns in accredited residency programs and must be fully licensed physicians with an intermittent or fee‑basis contract. PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they must perform restricted duties under supervision.
Proficiency in spoken and written English

Duties
Provides quality patient‑centered care to adults age 18‑65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by the ACOS of Primary Care
Assesses Veterans using advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills, identifying acute, non‑acute, and chronic health problems
Ensures safe, efficient, and high‑quality healthcare is delivered within the department, consistent with VHA directives and VHNIHCS policies on emergency medicine
Facilitates physician‑to‑physician conversations regarding inpatient admissions, including diagnoses, assessment, and recommendations
Demonstrates sound clinical and administrative decision‑making that enhances the physician’s role
Engages in daily patient care, coordinating with nursing staff, consultations, and diagnostic studies; facilitates therapeutic procedures
Communicates with patients and families, provides patient education, discharge planning, coordination with outpatient providers, and medication reconciliation
Ensures clear hand‑offs and sign‑outs to incoming physicians for informed transition of care
Coordinates with admitting physicians and consultants to organize diagnostic and treatment plans for all patients pending admission
Maintains appropriate clinical privileges to fulfill duties within Primary Care Service
