Veterans Law Project Paralegal

Atlanta Legal Aid Society (“Legal Aid”) seeks a Paralegal to join its Veterans Law Project located in its downtown Atlanta office. Our non-profit law firm represents low-income persons in a variety of civil legal matters including family, housing, consumer, public benefits, education and health law. Founded in 2022, the Veterans Law Project has had an immediate and profound impact on the civil legal needs of veterans in the metro-Atlanta area. The Project advocates on behalf of veterans to obtain cash benefits, health and housing benefits, restrict criminal and consumer records, upgrade military discharges, and prevent homelessness - with an emphasis on eviction prevention. The Veterans Law Project staff support veterans through holistic legal services, as well as collaborations for supportive services with local law schools and courts, the VA hospital, and veteran services organizations. The unit currently consists of a managing attorney, two staff attorneys, and two paralegals.ResponsibilitiesScreening of clients and questionnaire completionEnsure grant compliance, organize data and documentation required for grants, attend scheduled site visits and assist in the preparation of periodic reportsData management, including entering information into Legal Aid’s database and retrieving relevant dataFile management, including scanning documents into the client database, digital organization, filing, drafting letters, assisting with document preparation, and archiving closed casesClient management, including providing clients with information and advice under the strict supervision of an attorneyUnit management including maintaining the monthly intake and outreach schedule, training of new staff, volunteers and interns on the case management system, maintaining volunteer contact information and case assignments, tracking and closing cases, providing litigation and non-litigation support to the attorneyOther tasks as assignedQualificationsAn undergraduate degree or paralegal certificate is preferred, but not requiredOne to two years of experience in social services, including outreach with a legal nonprofit or comparable settingPrevious experience working with homeless and veteran populations is strongly preferredDemonstrated commitment to public service and previous work with low-income people, with an appreciation for diversity, is strongly preferredExcellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, listening, and organizational skillsMust possess creative problem solving skills with meticulous attention to detail and data entry accuracyDemonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative, hybrid team modelPrior experience with law office management software strongly preferredProficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Proficiency in languages other than English, specifically Spanish, is highly valuedSalary And BenefitsThis position offers a salary of $50,000, but may vary (up or down) depending on work experience.
